This volume, The Q Thomas Reader, contains a bit of history unknown to most about the origins of Christian documents. The book is in two sections: the first deals with the Q, or Sayings, gospel, a hypothesised document most likely shared by Matthew and Luke as a basis for their gospels, and the Gospel of Thomas, an early document popular in some Christian communities, but which did not get incorporated into the final Christian canon of any community surviving past the ancient period.
The Q (short for Quelle, German for 'source') does not come down to modern times in any direct documentary form. Rather, it is a document whose existence has been theoretically accepted as a likely source for material that is shared by Matthew and Luke, but which is not found in Mark. The first three canonical gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke, are called synoptic gospels, as they look at essentially the same events in the essentially the same way; Matthew and Luke both contain substantial parts of Mark (albeit with some revisions), and each contain original material, but the amount of material they share apart from the Markan material led scholars to believe there was another source (hence Quelle, source) they held in common. The introductory essay by Michael Steinhauser discusses this theory, as well as the method of reconstruction for Q. This is not without controversy, both in the theory and in the reconstruction, which the authors admit freely.
The translation of Q by John Kloppenborg is based upon his work 'Q Parallels', a new translation based upon Greek texts (so any particular English version may not agree with the translations here). Q is set out in both Matthew and Luke frameworks; the boldface shows verbatim agreements between the two in the Greek text, with various other notations used to show the differences. Where these refer to Mark or other scriptural texts, this is also noted.
The Gospel of Thomas is set out in a dual language format. Consisting of 114 verses or so (the division of books of the Bible into chapter and verse did not come until the latter half of Christian history - a thousand years passed between the formation of the canon and the insertion of chapter and verse numbers), the book was found as part of the Nag Hammadi library (which consists of many books and book fragments from the ancient days of Christianity that never made it to the official canon). Like many non-canonical gospels, the Gospel of Thomas is more a collection of sayings (like Q) rather than a narrative story (like the four canonical gospels in the Bible).
The Greek text here is presented comes from the Nag Hammadi library, with a new translation by Marvin Meyer presented beside. Following this text is a collection of translated pieces from the Oxyrhynchus fragments, which also contain pieces of the Gospel of Thomas (and were discovered as documents half a century prior to the Nag Hammadi discovery, but were not identified until after the Nag Hammadi pieces were published).
An introductory essay by Stephen Patterson introduces the Gospel of Thomas in similar fashion to Q; historical placement, discovery, linguistic and theological issues are explored, particularly the relationship between Thomas and the other schools of thought that made progress through early Christianity.
This book presents a fascinating introduction to some alternative theories and readings, and shows the diversity of opinion about Jesus in the early church. To understand the historical context and documentary progression that leads from early Christianity to the present is to better understand our own world, and this text is one small part of that path to understanding.

Two texts at the heart of today's quest for the real Jesus

Anyone who knows anything about the Jesus Seminar (and other recent questers for the historical Jesus) will know that the hypothetical Q and the Coptic Gospel of Thomas are highly prized sources. The highest proportion of "red" and "pink" (authentic) sayings of Jesus appears in the intersection of Q and Thomas, with the idea that sayings that appear in both of these sources must be old. This book by Polebridge Press (the publishers of the Jesus Seminar) presents in readily accessible form these two sources. The "Q" source is thought to be the second document used by Matthew and Luke (in addition to the Gospel of Mark), and so Q is presented in the forms of parallel passages in Matthew and Luke (as we don't have any manuscripts of Q). The Gospel of Thomas is extant in three Greek fragments and a complete Coptic version, so this book includes an English translation and the original Coptic text on the facing page. An appendix shows the parallels between Q and Thomas. There is an introduction of about 25 pages for Q, and an introduction of about 50 pages for the Gospel of Thomas. Anyone who is interested in ancient material on Jesus will find this book to be a useful presentation of the sources.

About the Author
JACK PRELUTSKY, long considered the unofficial poet laureate of elementary school kids, was officially names the nation’s first Children’s Poet Laureate in 2006. He has written more than forty books of verse, ranging from his big collectionsof more than one hundred verses each–such as The New Kid on the Block and It’s Raining Pigs and Noodles–to his delightful picture book collections such as: Good Sports: Rhymes About Running, Jumping, Throwing, and More and Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant, a Lee Bennet Hopkins Honor Book. In addition to The Random House Books of Poetry for Children, he has also compiled The 20th- Century Children’s Poetry Treasury, The Beauty of the Beast, Read-Aloud Rhymes for the Very Young, and eight other award-winning anthologies. He was born in the Bronx, has traveled to all fifty states to promote poetry, and now lives in Seattle with his wife, Carolyn.

ARNOLD LOBEL began his career in children’s books in 1961 and illustrated over seventy books, some of which he also wrote. He received the Caldecott Medal for Fables in 1981 and a Caldecott Honor in 1971 for Frog and Toad Are Friends. It’s sequel, Frog and Toad Together, was an 1973 Newberry Honor Book. His last major project before his death in 1987 was The Arnold Lobel Book of Mother Goose (originally published as The Random House Book of Mother Goose). He is widely considered one of the greatest children’s book illustrators of the twentieth century.

As a middle school reading teacher, I host an annual Poetry Reading Competition open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. For the past several years, this book has been a prize, in addition to plaques for the first and second prize winners. The best review for this book is that the children use it, read it, and often select poems from it for their entry pieces. Even better, perhaps, is that I have had thanks from many parents for awakening an interest in poetry in their children, boys and girls alike. This volume of poetry offers a full range of poems, for short to long, humorous to sublime, and in a wide range of topics. While it is just one of a wide selection of books and poets I offer my students, it is one of the most versatile. Whether teaching rhyme scheme, simile and metaphor, slanted rhyme, figurative language, or stress, this is also an invaluable part of my teaching arsenal.

On the Mullendore Murder Case...

I read this book for the first time in the late 1970's and wanted to read further about the case when I finished it. The ONLY information I found in my library were the two articles from the Wall Street Journal, which prompted the book in the first place.
I found the book to be reliable and a most interesting read, considering the murder has never been solved. When I discussed it with a friend from Caney, Kansas, he told me he was well acquainted with the case and its principals and was unequivocal regarding the identity of the murderer. Apparently it is common knowledge in that town (his opinion dovetails with mine, by the way). Once you read the book, you should have no doubt in your mind regarding the name of the killer. But, one wonders why the Mullendores themselves from that day to this seem to have no interest in bringing him to justice.
This is fascinating stuff, well written and well researched.

real bodyguard / chub

I was raised in Caney Ks. and also was close to the story. for one thing,Kent Green was not E.C.s bodyguard. His bodyguard was Chub(Damon) Anderson. I lived next door to Chub when he lived on east 3rd. street.We had common friends and saw each other often.It was always said that Chub shot himself to make it look like he was also shot while the murder was taking place. I have seen Chub without his shirt on and the wound site could not have been self infected. He would have had gun shot residue on his hand and on his skin. Chub is a sick man, why don,t we let him alone to live his life without this being over his head forever.

Riveting! An intriguing, real-life, never solved whodunnit.

Though I live near where much of the story takes place, the Mullendore Murder Case will appeal to anyone who likes a great mystery. The case was never solved and involved a cast of characters ranging from Mickey Mantle to the Mob. Kwitny builds the story masterfully using a combination of historical research and personal interviews. This is fascinating stuff and will appeal to anyone who likes a good whodunnit. I've read it three times and still don't know. See if you can figure it out. Highly recommended!

this is a heart warming/breaking book to read. i read it all in a sitting while in a room called the refection room at the san diego airport. it was a beautiful experience. the book is something of a poetic chronicle of a section of Noah's life and i thought it was kind of like a new way to write an autobiography. It got all the things across that autobio's usually try to get across but in less words and more effectively as well.

all in all tho, this is a poetry book about love and what it did to Noah. its honest and well worth your ten dollars

These poems paint him as a wanderer in every sense of the word: a literal tumbleweed drifting through familiar & unfamiliar landscapes and states of being. His journeys could be framed with classical references, yet are undoubtedly the modern story. About Ravi Sethi

Ravi Sethi, director of Computing Science Research, has been at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey since 1976. He has held teaching positions at Pennsylvania State university and the University of Arizona, and has taught at Princeton University and Rutgers. Dr. Sethi is co-author of the "dragon book", Compilers: Principles, Techniques and Tools and has written numerous articles. His books have been translated in Japanese, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Korean.

This book is designed for junior/senior level courses on programming languages. A minimal pre-requisite is an introductory programming course. With supplementary readings, the book can also be used for graduate courses.

What's New in this Edition?

Changes on the language scene and feedback from the use of the book have prompted a thorough revision. Instructors liked the emphasis on concepts, but asked that the concepts be illustrated using fewer languages. Meanwhile, Modula-2 has faded, and C++ has taken off as a language for production programming. Candidates for functional languages now include Standard ML, Haskell, and Miranda.

The new outline has 15 chapters, three more than the first edition. The role of the three new chapters is as follows:

Data types like arrays, records, and pointers have a new chapter.
Functional programming is introduced using ML in a new chapter.
Language summaries appear in a final chapter.

Language description and syntax are now treated early, in Chapter 2.

Organization of this Book

The emphasis is on concepts and how they work together, rather than on language features. Related concepts are therefore covered together, to allow meaningful examples and programming exercises along the way. Just enough of a language is introduced, as needed, for the examples and exercises. Language summaries appear in Chapter 15.

Part I: Introduction

Chapter 1 traces the role and development of programming languages. It introduces the programming paradigms in this book. They include imperative, object-oriented, functional, and logic programming.

Syntax description is treated in Chapter 2, so it can be applied in the rest of the book. The examples in the chapter deal with expressions, since methods for describing the syntax of expressions carry over to the rest of a language.

Part II: Imperative Programming

The imperative family is treated in Chapters 3-5. The term ''imperative'' comes from command or action; the computation model is that of a sequence of actions on an underlying machine.

Chapter 3 deals with control flow. Structured constructs like while statements organize the flow of control so that the unit of programming is a structured statement, instead of an individual assignment. Students in a course that emphasizes imperative programming are usually familiar with Pascal, so this chapter goes beyond assignments and structured statements to consider programming with invariants. The examples deal with basic values, like integers, and arrays.

Chapter 4 deals with data in imperative languages. Data representation facilities such as arrays, records, and pointers, have been stable since Pascal and C appeared. The treatment of these facilities anticipates their use to represent objects in Chapters 6 and 7.

Chapter 5 rounds out the discussion of the core of imperative languages, embodied in a language like Pascal or C. Among the topics are the distinction between the source text of a procedure and its activations, parameter passing, scope rules, and storage allocation.

This book illustrates imperative programming using Pascal, where possible. Pascal suffices as a vehicle for Chapters 3-5. C is an alternative.

Part III: Object-Oriented Programming

As programs get larger, the natural unit of programming is a grouping of data and operations. The progression of concepts for such groupings can be described in terms of modules, user-defined types (for example, stacks), and classes (as in object-oriented programming).

Chapter 6 begins with of programming with procedures, modules, and classes. These constructs serve distinct needs and can be used in combination with each other: procedures are needed to implement operations in a module or class; modules can be used to statically partition the source text of a program with classes. Some versions of Pascal support modules; they can be used for the first half of Chapter 6 as well. C++, an extension of C, is introduced in Chapter 6.

The model of computation in Chapter 7 is that of independent objects. The objects interact by sending messages to each other. The first third of the chapter introduces object-oriented programming in general, using a running example that has similar implementations in C++ and Smalltalk. The rest of the chapter has independent coverage of C++ and Smalltalk, so either one can be used to explore object-oriented programming. Based on feedback from instructors, this edition covers C++ before Smalltalk, inverting the order in the previous edition. Object-oriented programming is illustrated using both C++ and Smalltalk, since the two represent different approaches.

All of the concepts in Chapters 3 - 7 can be illustrated using C++. Students can be introduced directly to C++, without going through C.

Part IV: Functional Programming

Functional programming is worth studying as a programming style in its own right; as a setting for studying concepts such as types; and as a technique for language description. The emphasis in Chapter 8 is on concepts, in Chapters 9 and 10 on programming style, and in Chapter 13 on language description. The computational model is based on an expression interpreter; an expression consists of a function applied to subexpressions.

The emphasis in Chapter 8 is on concepts. The simplicity of functional languages makes them convenient for introducing concepts such as values, types, names, and functions. The simplicity results from the emphasis on expressions and values, independent of the underlying machine. The chapter treads ground common to functional languages, using ML as the working language.

The fundamental difference between ML and Lisp is that ML is typed; the influence of types permeates the language. Chapter 9 uses ML to illustrate the use of functions and datatypes. As first-class citizens, functions have the same status as any other values in functional programming. This first-class status permits the creation of powerful operations on collections of data.

Functional programming originated with Lisp. Programs and data are both represented by lists in Lisp; the name is a contraction of ''List Processor.'' The uniform use of lists makes Lisp eminently extensible. Chapter 10 explores the use of lists, using the Scheme dialect of Lisp.

Part V: Other Paradigms

Logic programming goes hand in hand with Prolog, in Chapter 11. Logic programming deals with relations rather than functions. Where it fits, programs are concise, consisting of facts and rules. The languages uses the facts and rules to deduce responses to queries.

Concurrent programming is illustrated using Ada, in Chapter 12. An alternative approach would have been to cover concurrent programming after object-oriented programming. Processes can be formed by giving each object its own thread of computation. The present organization puts functional programming before concurrent programming.

Part VI: Language Description

The methods for language description in Chapter 13 are aimed at specialists. The methods range from attributes used for language translation, to logical rules for used type inference, to interpreters used for clarifying subtle language questions.

A language can be described by writing a definitional interpreter for it, so called because its purpose is to define the interpreted language; efficiency is not a concern. McCarthy's & original definitional interpreter for Lisp in Lisp remains important for language description, so language description is illustrated using the Scheme dialect of Lisp. Chapter 13 develops an interpreter for a small subset of Scheme.

The lambda calculus is the intellectual ancestor of functional languages. The small syntax of the lambda calculus has also led to its use as a vehicle for studying languages. Variants of the lambda calculus are introduced in Chapter 14. The chapter progresses from the pure untyped lambda calculus to typed lambda calculi.

Chapter 15 contains brief summaries of the languages in this book.

Just because it's challenging doesn't mean it's bad

I hated this book when it was the assigned text in my programming languages course. But having just graduated with a BS in CS, I went back and looked thru this book after seeing the negative reviews here. After taking courses like compiler and multi-threaded programming, I feel the book does an excellent job of showing how programming languages evolved, and why. Some of the examples are a little abstract(i agree that the quilt example is too hard to follow, and is spread over too many pages), but for a book that is trying to show the reasons languages evolved it does a good job.

An fantastic book in my opinion

Most of the previous comments are either very favourable to the book (i.e. 4 or 5 stars) or completely against it (1 star).

According to me, this book is a fantastic book IF YOU LIKE PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES. These are the languages I use (from time to time) on my Linux box: AWK, Scheme, LISP, C/C++, Java, Python and Ruby. I'm also trying to understand AspectJ, Oz and Erlang. I think this book is made for persons like me who find pleasure discovering and using new programming languages (and paradigms).

I can understand that if you are a professional programmer (i.e. doing it for a living), this book is of (relatively) little value.

Personally, I love this book!

Hey, this book isn't that bad

OK, so it has a stupid bear on the cover, but as far as methodical organization it actually falls in mid to upper range for books on this topic. I think it is quite reasonable as far as content, clarity, and organization. It is not overly chatty but friendly and less dry than most. It does not shy away from defining terms which some books do. The previous reviews are shockingly harsh. There is an opening for a concise easy to read book in this area and I think this book is a reasonable start.

Delivers on the Title

Simple Candle Magick by Cassandra Larsen is a short guide to Wicca candle spells. It contains an introduction explaining candle magick, use of candles and optional accessories, and spell preparation; an easy guide to thirteen (excellent number for a witchcraft book!) spells; and a reference section explaining color magick, runes, and the meanings of oils used in spells.

Larsen delivers on the title; Simple Candle Magick is an easy guide to spells. I can’t comment on the powerful part, but I was tempted to buy some candles so I could carve the runes into them and try the spells! (And I’m an atheist!) It’s well written and well formatted. The only criticism I have is that I would have liked to see images in the book; images of the types of candles, runes, amulets, bottles of oil, etc. discussed in the book. Images would enhance this book. However, it’s still a very good guide to simple candle spells.

Focus on positive spells and positive energy

Simple Candle Magick by Cassandra Larsen is a step-by-step guide of how to perform “spells” that the author states will bring positive change into one’s life. I am glad that she focuses on positive spells and positive energy, and it seems to me that the meditative part of the spells might be what practitioners of this craft find most helpful. It made interesting reading for me, as I gained insight into how “spells” are actually performed. As this material is new to me, after a bit of research, I discovered that Wicca is a relatively new religion, with a set of beliefs, rituals, and holidays that sound fairly complex.

I have to be honest when I say that I do not advocate practicing any method or art form without understanding the history and meaning behind one’s actions. I know this book is too short to delve into the beliefs of Wicca (although a god and goddess are mentioned in the spells we are advised to chant to help to change our lives). On the surface, it seems like this book would be a good manual for a practitioner of this craft, but even this is difficult to evaluate without more background information. I am not sure how this book compares with other books on the topic as well. So, although the book on the surface seems well-written, unfortunately, as one who does not practice Wicca, I cannot be sure how useful this book really is. I believe a review by one who is knowledgeable about this material would be the most helpful to the reader, which I am sure will follow soon.

Great book on basic candle magic

Thorough little book on the basics of candle magic. Includes some spells/ candle work that can be done by a beginner. I particularly liked the correspondences at the end for colors, runes and oil usages.
