About the Author

• Alasdair Allan is a Scientist, Author, Hacker and Tinkerer, and co-founder of a startup working on fixing the Internet of Things. He is the author of a number of books, and from time to time he also stands in front of cameras. He is a contributing editor for MAKE magazine, and a contributor to the O'Reilly Radar. A few years ago he caused a privacy scandal by uncovering that your iPhone was recording your location all the time. This caused several class action lawsuits and a U.S. Senate hearing. Several years on, he still isn't sure what to think about that. Alasdair is a former academic. As part of his work he built a distributed peer-to-peer network of telescopes which, acting autonomously, reactively scheduled observations of time-critical events. Notable successes included contributing to the detection of what--at the time--was the most distant object yet discovered.
• Don Coleman is a lifelong engineer who has come full circle, from mechanical to software and now to hardware, bridging the gap between all disciplines. Don is a seasoned PhoneGap developer who has embraced it since its inception, and has spoken across the country about the benefits and advantages of using PhoneGap. As the Director of Consulting for Chariot Solutions, a software consulting company near Philadelphia, PA, he works with teams and clients to reinvent their existing technology and lay the groundwork for the future.

Well-Written with Tons of Photos

I spotted this gem at the local library and decided to check it out. I had no idea there was anything called "LE" Bluetooth. The first chapter is devoted to acquainting the reader with the technology and how it works. I thought the authors did a good job explaining the basics of what this standard is, and what platforms use it. The authors base their examples on both Arduino and Raspberry Pi. Hardware for each option is clearly identified in the projects--so you can take your pick.

The projects contain a large number of photos, illustrating what your hardware should look like. For smartphone apps, the book similarly shows lots of screen-captures. For each project, the exact code is given. At the beginning of each project, there is a Bill of Material ("Hardware") so you can figure out what stuff you need to buy.

Sprinkled throughout the book are "Cannon Ball" warnings, to alert the reader to some special difficulties. For example, the authors point out some features in Android that are flat-out defective, and what they can do as a "work around."

Perhaps the most intriguing project in the book relates to using Bluetooth to control a drone!

All in all, an excellent, well-designed book, that is both a good intro to the subject, as well as a practical guide to start using this technology. I really liked the clear layout of the book, and the numerous photos. This book is really aimed to helping the reader SUCCEED!

Arduino projects and almost nothing about Raspberry Pi and Bluetooth

I was very disappointed because there was only one project using the Raspberry Pi and Bluetooth. Almost all of the book's contents was about Arduino Bluetooth projects. The cover is very misleading: it should not have used Raspberry Pi on the cover, and then have only a single Raspberry Pi and Bluetooth project. It seems like the single project using Raspberry Pi was included to be able to put Raspberry Pi on the cover to help sell the book. Don't buy this book if you want information about the Raspberry Pi and Bluetooth.

Simply the best

This book is truly well written accompanied with fantastic photos from the sistine chapel.
I found it easy to follow and I only wish I purchased the book before I went to Italy last year.
The details were exquisite and I highly recommend this book to anyone who intends to visit the
sistine chapel or those who are interested in great artist like Michaelangelo.

Enlightening

Very easy and interesting read. I visited the Sistine Chapel a few years back but was unable to learn much as to the meaning of each of the paintings on the ceiling. The tour guide was knowledgeable enough for a quick tour but I wanted to know more. This book delivers.

The author shares what Michelangelo told friends and biographers as to the meanings of the various paintings.The author also shares with his readers how the ceiling was viewed at the time of its unveiling by the artists contemporaries.

This is not a dry, boring read, and I would recommend it to anyone traveling to Rome who plans on visiting the Sistine Chapel, or who just wants to know more about the artist and his greatest work outside of his sculpting.

Michelangelo is Magnificent - and so is this book!

There have been many, many books written about this subject - as well there should be! Some have been very good, many quite boringly bad, others just off-the-wall in their alleged revelations of obscure, arcane Da Vinci-type "codes" hidden in the paintings. So I bought the hardcover edition of this book with some trepidation, wondering what else was there to be said about the most famous ceiling in world. Having just finished reading this book, I can simply say that it truly isn't WHAT you do, it is HOW you do it. And Andrew Graham-Dixon has DONE it, admirably, wonderfully. His book is clear, concise, perfectly ilustrated - and it is also, by my lights, the best and most poetic description of Michelangelo's glorious ceiling ever written. I'll go even further: what the Maestro put on the ceiling in paints, this author puts into this book in words! One example may suffice: in discussing the fresco entitled The Deluge (depicting Noah and the survivors of the Great Flood) Mr. Graham-Dixon poetically points out the unique composition wherein half the fresco is crowded with human misery and the other half is virtually blank with calm but deadly and steadily rising waters. He concludes his insightful description and commentary on this compositional disparity with a summation of Michelangelo's apparent artistic intent - and that is to show that "The world is a picture that God can unpaint at any moment." What a line! An aphorism in and of itself. These types of rich and extremely well-worded interpretations fill the deceptively slim volume. Reading this book, one feels as if they were seeing the ceiling paintings for the first time.

The book also details Michelangelo's entire life in, again, the same pointed, poetic manner. Mr. Graham-Dixon even does a Joe Friday in sticking to "just the facts" when discussing Michelangelo's much debated sexuality. In two short pages, the author succinctly argues the case against the popular belief that the artist was homosexual. It would not have mattered if he were - but it is this type of clear-headed research and writing that makes this book so profound and so thrilling to read.

I was sorry when the book ended. It's that good!

Harry K. Wong and Rosemary T. Wong are award-winning teachers and new teacher advocates. The Essentials

As a teacher going into my second year I am very grateful for this book. I loved reading "The First Days of School" as it gave me a multitude of ideas and inspired me to be as prepared as I could for my first year. This new book has also been an essential piece to my summer planning. It clearly outlines how to set up your own management plan and gives excellent, specific ideas for the procedures that are necessary for a smoothly run classroom. This would have been great to read in my first year, but I still find so much worth in this book as a second year teacher. I highly recommend it.

Great book but...DON'T buy it if you teach high school. Despite the book's description, it is mainly geared toward elementary. Disappointed. I don't need chapters like "CLASSROOM JOBS."

Best Classroom Management Book Ever

I have been involved with Harry Wong and his training for 24 years. This new book has everything a new teacher needs. In fact, veteran teachers will profit from it also. Every time I look at one of Harry's books, I learn something new or innovative. Even with 45 years of experience in education, I love reading his book. My company trains new teachers and I have done this for 24 years and always purchase Harry Wong's book for each teacher.

Loving the Dirty Laundry Series!

Wow! Another great book in this series! I must say when this comes out in paperback or trade I may have to buy it just so I can cuddle with the whole series. I'm telling you it will. Carina would be crazy not to print this series in one book!

Jarod...James...whatever you want to call him-is scrumptious! Sigh. Smart, sexy, dominating, sweet...everything I want in a man. Real or imagined. Nora was great as a heroine. Strong and smart....and ultimately forgiving. The phone sex was HAWT...and so was the laundry room. Yikes! May have to make DH call me and talk dirty so we can meet in some random laundry room somewhere and play. :D Okay...that's not happening but this book will make you wanna. Go read it!

Can you imagine losing notes that reveal your deepest, darkest desires? That's what happened to Nora MacGregor. She is working on her dissertation and she loses not only her research but personal notes that reveal some of her own desires. She is frantic to find them. She is shocked one night when she receives a phone call from an anonymous male who claims to have her notes. He will give them back to her one page at time for every question she answers.

The only bright spot at the university where Jarod is teaching is the girl he watches twice a week doing laundry. He doesn't know who she is and finally gathers the courage to meet her. After a disastrous meeting, he finds her notes and research lying on the ground and decides to use them to his advantage.
Through "James" both Nora and Jarod are able to live out their fantasies they are too scared to acknowledge they have. By day they are meeting for coffee and getting to know each other. At night they are having hot, steamy phone sex.

I love the connection between the two. Jarod is truly interested in Nora and wants to learn more about her. They make each other laugh and enjoy being together. James allows them to have the sexual chemistry and play their fantasies out. They can say and do what they want because it's anonymous and they won't be judged for their actions.

Once she knows the truth, I love how Jarod gets Nora to tell him the rest of her secret fantasy. He is determined to be the one she is dreaming about, not James. The ending is great and it was definitely worth the wait for these two to actually hook up.

Pleasant Surprise!

Uptight biologist Nora MacGregor has never been truly satisfied by a man yet spends her time working on her dissertation on female sexuality. Frustrated Dr. Jerod Reed sees Nora walk by his classroom window every Tuesday and Thursday evening promptly at five, right in the middle of the English class he instructs. In a moment of impulsiveness, he dismisses his class at 4:59 and rushes outside to finally meet the mystery woman. He finds her, with a spilled basket of laundry and a can of pepper spray in hand, ready for use. She leaves, but he has her name off her name tag and something else-- notes and a cassette tape of interviews essential to her dissertation. He tracks her down to return her items but instead gets a coffee date for the next day.

After reading her notes and her own unfinished handwritten fantasy, he calls her, but his allergies are on overdrive causing his voice to deepen. Nora doesn't recognize who has called her and, against all caution, he tells her his name is James. He says he has her notes and will return them, three pages at a time for every intimate question she answers. It doesn't take long for Nora to beg Jame to "talk dirty to me" while struggling with her growing feelings for Jarod.

I loved this novella. It was extremely well written and a delightful combination of sweet and sexy. When Nora discovers Jarod and James are really the same person, her "revenge" is perfect. The wait for their eventful get together is worth every page. I understand one reviewer's unease over a "stranger" calling her and being so intimate. But it was the fact she *didn't* know the real person that allowed her to let her guard down and become uninhibited. This the very reason people will bare their souls to nameless strangers on the internet instead of someone in the next room. In my opinion, James and Nora aren't different than any other couples in erotica when the heroine has a sexual encounter with a "stranger" within hours of meeting him. The only difference is "James" didn't have a face and a body to go with his sexy voice.

I look forward to reading more from Inez Kelley!

William James in the Library of America

The Library of America has performed a great service by making the writings of the American psychologist and philosopher William James (1842 -- 1910) available to a large audience in two large volumes. Volume 1, which I am reviewing here, consists of James's earlier writings from the period 1878 -- 1899. It includes the "Psychology: Briefer Course" (1892), the "Will to Believe and other Essays in Popular Philosophy" (1897), "Talks to Teachers on Psychology and to Students on Some of Life's Ideals" (1899), and selected essays. The second volume of the series includes James' major works from 1900 until his death, including the "Varieties of Religious Experience", "Pragmatism", and "A Pluralistic Universe, and additional essays. The two collections do not include James's monumental "Principles of Psychology" (1890), his first important book and the product of twelve years of effort. The "Principles" would require a separate volume of its own. But they include virtually all James's other essential writings and offer an excellent way for the reader to get to know James first-hand and in-depth.

In reading both volumes, I was left with the impression of the continuity of James's themes and thought. James was trained as an MD, the only academic degree he ever received. He began with an interest in Darwin's theory of evolution and in physiology. He soon expanded his interests and became an important founder of modern psychology. His later work develops philosophies of pragmatism, radical empiricism, and pluralism.

This collection of James's early writings shows that James's philosophical concerns pervaded his writing, including his scientific writing, from the outset. James was an empiricist and a scientist committed, as the "Psychology" and several of the essays in this volume show to careful and painstaking scientific research. But James was far from advocating a philosophy of materialism or what today is called scientism or reductionism. Throughout his life, he was preoccupied with showing the complex and many-faceted character of human life. The determinism of the scientific method, for James, did not negate human purpose, activity, and free will. And, most importantly, for James, it did not negate the possibility of religious life or belief in God. In his famous essay "The Will to Believe" included in this volume (which would have better been called "The Right to Believe") and in its companion essays, James argued at length that the teachings and method of science did not destroy the possibility of religion.

In approaching this volume of James's early writings, it might be advantageous for the new reader to distinguish between James's more accessible, popular efforts and his more technical works. An excellent place for the new reader to start in this volume would be with the three essays to students in the "Talks to Teachers and to Students." The essay "On a Certain Blindness in Human Beings" is a wonderful brief introduction to James as it shows eloquently how every person tends to see the world through his own eyes and to ignore or downplay the thoughts and insights of other people. Following the three essays in Talks to Students, I suggest reading James' 1898 essay "Philosophical Conceptions and Practical Results" delivered in 1898 in Berkeley, California. In this essay, James first announced and articulated his philosophy of pragmatism, and stated his indebtedness to his philosophical colleagues Charles Peirce and Josiah Royce. This essay makes inspiring reading. James is direct and eloquent in relating his pragmatic philosophy to the religious quest.

After reading these short essays, a good next step would be to read the collection "The Will to Believe and Other Essays in Popular Philosophy." In this collection, James is addressing educated college audiences as he explores questions of religious faith, free will, pluralism, and ethics. The final essay in this volume of James's writings, "On Immortality" can be read together with the essays in "The Will to Believe."

The two remaining books in this collection are both derived from James's massive "Principles of Psychology." The "Talks to Teachers" is short and accessible. It focuses on how psychology can be used to advantage in teaching young students. This short book offers an insightful and accessible introduction to James's psychology. Here is one of the more inspring passages in James from the "Memory" chapter of "Talks to Teachers" on the value of perserverence and purpose and the will to learn in the face of obstacles.

"Depend upon it, no one need be too much cast down by the discovery of his deficiency in any elementary faculty of the mind. What tells in life is the whole mind working together, and the deficiencies of any one faculty can be compensated by the efforts of the rest. You can be an artist without visual images, a reader without eyes, a mass of erudition with a bad elementary memory. In almost any subject your passion for the subject will save you. If you only care enough for a result, you will almost certainly attain it. If you wish to be rich, you will be rich; if you wish to be learned, you will be learned; if you wish to be good, you will be good. Only you must, then, really wish these things, and wish them with exclusiveness, and not wish at the same time a hundred other incompatible things just as strongly." (p. 790)

The "Psychology: Briefer Course" was an abridgment James prepared of his "Principles" for use in college introductory courses in psychology. Even though it is an abridgment, the book includes a great deal of detail. It develops James's thought on the "stream of consciousness" and on the nature of the "self" and it is interlaced throughout with observations on the relationship between psychology, philosophy, and religion. Several of the remaining essays in the volume take up themes articulated in the "Psychology" and develop them in substantial technical detail.

James was an eloquent writer. His pragmatic philosophy has been highly influential, with thinkers such as Richard Rorty and Hilary Putnam acknowledging its influence. James preoccupation of reconciling the scientific and religious outlooks on life remains much with us. There is no better way to become involved with James's thoughts and issues than by serious and sustained reading of his works. The two volumes in the Library of America series will allow the reader to explore the work of William James. Readers wanting to get to know William James may also wish to read Robert Richardson's excellent biography "William James: In the Maelstrom of American Modernism".

An Atheist & The Will to Believe

OK--I readily admit it: I am both a big loser & a nerd. I had heard passing reference to William James is the abundance of schooling I have had, but never tried to read anything he wrote. Then, during one otherwise unmemorable episode of Star Trek--Next Generation, Patrick Stewart qua Captain Picard was enthralled with an "antique" volume by William James. The show did not mention which work it was--but that was good enough for me! And, courtesy of the fine people at Library of America, I picked up this edition.

First, in terms of Library of America editions, these are AMAZING. They are the right size in not being too big, but also are not what we used to call "trade paper backs" which are so hard to read. The binding is tight, yet the books easily lay flat. The paper is thin enough so the reader doesn't struggle with a three inch thick giant, yet thick enough to take lots of page turning. The selection & research that goes into producing each volume is second to none, and the works couldn't be more faithful. Most importantly, the books are priced to sell: you will be buying an edition meant to spread these works to the masses, one that will last a good long time & many readings. You are *not* buying a work of art, or an "investment" edition, or something that looks great on your book shelf. You're buying a book for reading. If you're looking for any work at all, and it comes in a Library of America edition, buy that book.

In terms of the specifics of William James, I'm pleased to report that Captain Picard once again shows that he knows his onions. For a book written before the turn of the century (and I mean the one one before the last turn), Dr. James writing style holds up remarkably well. All too often, books from that time period are simply unreadable, becasue writing styles have changed so much. Not so with William James. His writing & arguments are clear, interesting, even charming. He writes with a gentle amusment, especially when addressing difficult and challenging topics.

In terms of specific content, The Will to Believe is a defense of a certain type of belief in the face of rampent rationalism. James begins by pointing out the trivial nature of what passes for "belief," specifically dismissing "Pascal's wager" (You should believe in god because if you believe in god & there's no god, you haven't lost anything. But if you don't believe in god & there is a god, holy hades batman! That's bad!). Whatever "belief" may be, it is not "hedging your bets."

What James advoctates is a system of belief that strives for absolutes, yet always encourages skepticism and a scientific basis supporting those conclusions. James criticizes those who contend that no such absolutes exist, ironicly largely based on faith. While James may personally believe that such absolutes exist and can be discovered, those answers are found through search, evaluation, and careful study. While humans ultimately not discover those truths, it is still vital that we continue to seek them out.

I didn't agree with everything James argued, but found his viewpoint interesting and well worth considering. His writing is not as clear as Bertrand Russell's, but surprisingly Russell is the philosopher that James's work seemed closest.

If you have any interest in philosophy, especially on the shaddy lines between "psychology" and "philosphy," then this is a great place to go to. Don't wait for any other Star Trek captains to pick up this book--Lord only knows what else those guys (and Janeway) may be picking up.........

very good

any lover of philosophy OR psychology should doubtlessly buy this book. if you are interested in the work of William James, and are searching for the right compilation of his writings, you have found it, no doubt. but i strongly recommend buying the second volume to this, which basically looks the same but with a different picture on him on it and obviously other works by him.
now as for the works themselves.... Will does seem to change his basis for thought a lot of the time. one thing that particularly got to me is his lack of psychological/scientific integration into his "the moral philosopher". it is nevertheless a wonderful peice. and the writing is wonderful.... his talks to teachers and students being the more effortlessly read. Psychology: Briefer Course outlines psychology in a way that allows us to think in a way that integrates actual physical psychology into our perspective, instead of mystical talk of "souls", etc.
The Will to Believe is a collection of enthrawling works, and i particularly enjoyed talks to teachers and students. i can say my favorite work in this book is "On a Certain Blindness", one of the 3 talks to students. when philosophy becomes spiritual, is when you know you can really use it. a great book, buy it.

DECEPTION I have to call foul. Why is this book in the history section? When it is a known hoax????

This is the age of mis - information and outright lies. After reading the first five pages I knew there was a problem with this book something didn't feel right. So I did what every person should do in this day and age - I went online and did research it didn't take long to discover this is a hoax. There is no Willy Lynch this letter started appeared in print in the 1970's and hit the Internet in the 1990s. After reading the reviews I have to ask again why is this book in the history section as if it fact and or a part of US history?
In this climate of racial tension and the scars of past US history, this makes me angry. From the response of the reviewers it's painful,sad to know there are people who spend their money, took the time to read about history, even worst they believe this is true.
There is a Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia in BIG RAPIDS, Mich with a new exhibit hall at Ferris State University. On their website they have an article about this fake Willy Lynch Letter. Please read the article. I am putting this information in my review so people will know. So this book has done it's job, it's made some marginalize people feel marginalize. Bought back the pain and horrors some relatives and love ones endured. It's a shame people want to learn about their history, but you have books with known lies and fiction placed as if they are respected history.

After reading this I'm almost in tears because as a black man I see all of these things still happening today in our community and it's sickening. What's even worse is that people think African Americans are just born lazy and sorry when the truth of the matter is these things we're indoctrinated from birth, this value system needs to be untaught and we will truly be free.
