About the Author
Joe Hyams (1923-2008) was a columnist and bestselling author most known for his biographies of such Hollywood stars as Humphrey Bogart, James Dean, and Lauren Bacall. Hyams became involved in the martial arts during his service in the US Army, where he was frequently attacked for being Jewish. His years of studying with such figures as Bruce Lee and Ed Parker laid the groundwork for his 1979 book Zen in the Martial Arts.

Rapture! Bravo!

What a fantastic book. I just can't say it any better. I had to order this through an out-of-print book seller('The Book Nook', a wonderful company!), and that just added to the fun of reading it. This book has no bad points, whatsoever! I wish it was longer. Joe Hyams writing style is eloquent yet simple enough to bring out Jimmy's true nature. This is the most recent, in a string of 8 Dean biographies I've read, and it's such a necessity to any collection. To slightly contradict myself-my problem was only that it wasn't longer. Not a short read at all, the book was just so easy that it left you wanting to hear more about Jimmy from Mr. Hyams' perspective. It's the most objective standpoint anyone's taken on Jimmy, while still having a theme(angle)to write from. It's hard for me to find a bad Dean bio, simply because of my adoration of the young prodigy, but I can easily spot the great ones! Pick this book up. My used copy was in better shape than many new books I find at large bookstores. Again I must express my thanks to The Book Nook for making it possible for me to own this book, which I will utterly treasure. They work with amazon, so check them out.

One of the best biographies about James Dean

Joe Hyams is a real respectful and informative author who really wanted to write about James Dean what I know James Dean would have written about himself if he were alive today and decided to write about his personal life, which is something James Dean did not like to talk about with the media. Yes, Jimmy did love Pier Angeli whose real name is Anna Maria Pierangeli whom he lovingly called Annarella. This was a name her father called her before he died in 1950. James Dean found a true love in Anna and she in him. There are countless interviews and documentaries that can attest to Jimmy stating that Pier Angeli was the love of his life. Actress Julie Harris, James Dean's co-star in East of Eden mentions in one documentary that Jimmy was always talking about how much in love he was with Pier and how beautiful her soul was. Larry King interviewed co-stars of his who spoke about this very emphatic relationship in James Dean's life. They had many interests and one very important life change in common that is they both lost a parent. Neither one ever forgot about the other and author Joe Hyams wanted to make that known. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. James Dean would be delighted that this part of his life, the joyful part, was written about.

About the Author
Lynn Barber is an award-winning British journalist. Several collections of her interviews have been anthologised. She read English Literature at Oxford, worked for Penthouse magazine for seven years, then for the Sunday Express, Independent on Sunday, Vanity Fair, Observer and Sunday Times. Her books include two collections of interviews, Mostly Men and Demon Barber, as well as two sex manuals and a study of Victorian naturalists. Her memoir, An Education, was made into an award-winning film starring Carey Mulligan and Rosamund Pike. She lives in north London. @lynnbaba

Interesting if you are a fan of Barber's interviews but...

I found it rather sloppily written. Tossed off. I'm also rather disappointed that she is a self-confessed philistine. Doesn't seem to enjoy or even understand the arts. For someone who has grown up in the 60s, she is surprisingly conservative about many things...especially marriage. Her self-consciousness begins to grate after the first chapters. Seems she wants to deny she has a depressive personality which would explain many things rather than the trite and jolly explanations she gives. I have both collections of her interviews which I have read and reread often but reading her memoir left me feeling less admiration for her.

A bouquet of barbed wire.

I'm going to have to put my cards on the table here. I'm from the same generation as Lynn Barber; I've reached the stage in my life when I know what I like and I'm not going to do anything anymore that I don't like. Well, not if I can help it anyway. One of the things I certainly no longer enjoy is reading interviews with actors. You trudge through yards and yards of newsprint only to *discover* that, yes, they love to play 'challenging parts' and, yes, they 'can't wait to work with the director again' and, oh yes, they prefer to keep 'their personal lives private'. And just like that, another half-hour of your precious life has disappeared down the plug-hole.

One interviewer I always do read however, even when she's interviewing an actor, is of course the Demon Barber. And in this book we learn why her interviews always prove to be so interesting. Firstly, it's because she does her homework, spending a huge amount of time on research before the interview (so she won't ask the interviewee something they've been asked a hundred times before). She wastes not a second of precious interview time and refuses to do less than a one hour interview (she explains how nowadays even serious interviewers get trapped by the PR machine into flying half way round the world for a 15-minute slot with a star.) She always tapes her interviews (so perhaps 'a bouquet of wired barbs' would be a more accurate header) and spends at least a week writing them up.

This book contains the background to a selection of interviews, all of which make fascinating reading, even the ones where people I like or admire come off rather badly (Martin Clunes and Rafa Nadal). A Curious Career also updates the reader on Barber's terrific memoir An Education. Lynn Barber is self-aware, occasionally acerbic (and therefore sometimes quite scary), intuitive, intelligent and she also comes across as devastatingly honest. Above all, she is genuinely interested in people. This book is highly recommended for anyone who feels the same.

Disappointing and self-reverential - not fun to read and nasty tone makes it ugly

After all the review hype, I looked forward to reading this book, and I was terribly disappointed. Ms. Barber says that finding a husband is more important than any career - then never says why she continues to work (clearly for money, not for artistry). She hates interviewing actors, considering them beneath her for some reason - but she happily takes money for working with them. There are many rehashed, old interviews that we could have done without - there is a reason why she is unknown in the US, it's because she's not a great writer by any means. The nasty, judgemental sections about Martin Clunes and Rafael Nadal just show how little skill she has - clearly she likes to shock her audience, but it's really about her opinions of other people, the person being interviewed should be the star of the piece, but Barber makes it about herself. The chapter about Marianne Faithful is a hoot - as Barber goes out of her way to put down this icon, writing negative stuff at all times, then rehashes an old article which we are supposed to think is great (it's far from great, it's just ugly), and then she finally writes about Ms. Faithful talking to real journalists about Barber, something about apologizing to her? What for, we wonder - for Barber behaving unprofessionally and interrupting a photo shoot with David Bailey, as if Barber has something better to do? Like her "dinner with friends" is so vitally important that a photo shoot with 2 icons from the 60s should stop for her? WHAT?! Despite her lack of training or talent, Barber is so self-centered, she thinks the celebrities she interviews should just talk about her! You learn that Barber never had any training in journalism, just 7 years at Penthouse (hardly a great training ground for a WRITER, now perhaps as a photographer...) and she coasts from job to job on her connections. We can guess that, because her writing is terrible, nasty and often just boring. Having had this little sample of her "work," which she would NOT be doing if she could find a husband to live off of, I have learned the hard way to avoid her in future - which won't be difficult, as she is and will remain an unknown outside of a small UK readership. Avoid this book, it's not worth reading for any reason.

This is a book that was required for a class I took last year on the Pauline corpus. The book provides insight into why Paul said what he said and why others wanted to be associated with him as well as against him. Heirarchy and skin color were important markers as to how people were valued and treated in that day and time, issues that still exist for us in the USA. How closely do we follow the baptismal formula of Galatian 3:28, believed to be authentically Pauline??

About the Author
A founding member of the Los Angeles Oriental Artists Group, Tyrus Wong developed a personal artistic sensibility that joined his formal western art-school training with traditional Asian aesthetics. During the Great Depression, Tyrus participated in the WPA’s Federal Art Project and exhibited his work in a 1932 group exhibition at the Chicago Art Institute that also featured Pablo Picasso. His creativity and drive helped shape the artistic, bohemian life of Los Angeles during the 1930s.

From 1942 to 1968, Tyrus worked at Warner Bros as a production illustrator, drawing set designs and storyboards for many award-winning live-action feature films, including Rebel Without a Cause, Calamity Jane, Harper, Ice Palace, Around the World in Eighty Days, and The Wild Bunch.

On top of his fine art and illustration work for movies, scarves, pottery, and greeting cards, Tyrus channeled his talent into designing and hand-building elaborate multicolored kites, some more than 100 feet long, which he still regularly flies on the beaches of Santa Monica with his friends and family. In 2001, Tyrus was honored as a Disney Legend for his contributions to Bambi, and in 2006, he won an Annie Award (Association Internationale du film d’Animation) for lifelong achievement. There have been solo exhibitions of Tyrus’s work at the Chinese American Museum and the Museum of California Design.

After 102 years... Tyrus Wong's day has arrived!

This text, reflecting the exhibit of the same name hosted at the Walt Disney Family Museum at the Presidio of San Francisco, is long overdue.

However, the wait was worth it. The career of Chinese-American artist Tyrus Wong is the stuff of legends and it's about time for his story to be told.

For those who are unable to visit the museum's exhibition in person, this book stands on its own as an unprecedented tribute to a lifetime of magnificent storytelling through the unique artistry of Tyrus Wong. Whether working at the Walt Disney Studio on concept design for the dwarfs of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937)... or in breathing life into the unexpected character of "the forest" in "Bambi" (1942)... or in mastering three decades of art design for Warner Bros., the production art of Tyrus Wong will be admired long after all of us have exited the stage. It is nothing short of magnificent. Hold a mirror up to his art and the result is this very book.

The same can be said for the life of this exceptional artist. After leaving his mother and his sister behind in China when he was only nine years of age and traveling to the United States with his father, Tyrus Wong carved a future for himself and his family in this new land that few would have imagined to be possible.

This book tells the story of the kind, generous, compassionate and talented man who created his own opportunity in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. In overcoming economic hardship, racial prejudice and entrenched bigotry with his chosen profession, Tyrus Wong found those with whom he could be free to express his gift through the unique art forms that are reflected in this book.

Tyrus and Art History

This is a high quality, beautifully illustrated book on the history of one of the best west coast artists of the twentieth century. The book describes Wong's fascinating life from a young Chinese immigrant, to a struggling artist, to a top artist working with Walt Disney Co. and other major studios. The book includes examples of his paintings, sculptures, works on paper, toys, and his beloved kites. The quality of the photography in the book is outstanding.

First rate book for a first rate artist. If you love Bambi and have even the slightest interest in art of books this is the book for you, it's not about Bambi itself but the artist who cemented the look of the film. A genius.

His life has been the subject of numerous critical studies and even one mainstream film, Tom and Viv, which dissected the intimate details of Eliot's marriage to Vivien Haigh-Wood. With the publication of Inventions of the March Hare, admirers and critics of Eliot will gain new insight into the poet as a young man. The 40 poems contained in this volume were all written between the years 1909 and 1917, a period during which Eliot graduated from Harvard, spent a year in France, studied Buddhism and Sanskrit at Cambridge University, met Ezra pound, and married Vivien.

These poems reveal a great deal about T. S. Eliot, the man and the poet. His borrowings from other poets are often apparent (an older Eliot once declared: "immature poets imitate; mature poets steal"), as are the repressed scatological, sexual, and neurotic impulses that would have been offensive or shocking to readers of his time. The annotations by editor Christopher Ricks add to our understanding of the poems themselves and what they expose about their author's complicated psyche.

The Quintessential Collection of Lonely Verse

Eliot is known to undergrads and postgrads as the genius poet of "Four Quartets" and "The Wasteland;" a man who wrote some of the greatest and most confusing verse of the twentieth century. While the rewards of exploration into such poems are certainly great, it is perhaps a more human need for emotional comfort. The above, professional reviews focus on the small section of bawdry verse in the work, but the majority of this collection is devoted to the great, early emotional works of Eliot. The only familiar poem to most readers will probably be "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" (with a previously unpublished extension) and a more perfect banner work could not have been chosen. The poems are beautiful, concise, imagistic, painful, somber, but most of all lonely. Here in his early years Eliot is not living in an academic world, simply the world--with love, hypocrisy, doubt, joy, and emptiness. To read the greatest poet of our centu! ry describe that which is greatly profound is a privilege, here to read him describe what is simply profound is a gift. I recommend this book over all other collections of Eliot's or anyone else's verse. If you were not one of the 11th graders who discarded Prufrock as a helpless reject, and instead saw him as a deeply lonely individual much like ourselves, this volume is for you. It will touch your life and make you just that much more complete.

Missing Link

It's not Eliot's best work of course, but that's not why I bought it. I ordered this collection to better understand Eliot before he became Eliot. I found a few books of his very early poetry in my local university's library, but nothing for the years between childhood and Prufrock. I think I've gained a little more insight into one of my favorite modern poets.

Inventions of the March Hare

I absolutely love this book. I've always been a fan of T. S. Eliot, so I was very happy with "Inventions of the March Hare". It contains all of the famed Prufrock poems, as well as other well-known and previously unpublished poetry. There are also explanatory notes after the poems, and it even includes letters written by Eliot. I highly recommend "Inventions" for any Eliot, or poetry, fan.
