The mp3 file is free and easy to download and very helpful in that you are hearing German pronunciation by a native (male) speaker, in addition to reading it. It's a great aid for anyone who is studying German, on both the beginning and intermediate levels.

Mokeddem's lushly written third novel tells of one woman's rebellion against the constraints of Muslim fundamentalism in Algeria and, through her struggle, of all Algerian women's predicament in that inequitable society. Born to illiterate nomads, Mokeddem herself fought tradition and custom to become the only girl in her village to attend high school; she nurtured herself on the stories told by her Bedouin grandmother, who championed her intelligence and insisted on her education. Through immersion in the literary classics, she distanced herself from her origins, even refusing an arranged marriage. Eventually, she went to medical school and became an expatriate doctor in France. Her heroine Sultana's story, told in this short novel, virtually recapitulates her own. In Sultana, we see a strong yearning for freedom in conflict with the equally powerful sway of the past, and we glimpse the ambivalence as well as the anger of contemporary Algerian women. Lisa Wade, PhD, is a professor at Occidental College. She is an accomplished scholar and award-winning teacher with degrees in philosophy, human sexuality, and sociology. She lives in Los Angeles but calls New Orleans “home.”

Myra Marx Ferree is the Alice H. Cook Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the author of Varieties of Feminism: German Gender Politics in Global Perspective (2012), co-author of Shaping Abortion Discourse (2002) and Controversy and Coalition (2000), and co-editor of Gender, Violence, and Human Security (2013), Global Feminism (2006), and Revisioning Gender (1998) as well as numerous articles and book chapters. She is the recipient of various prizes for contributions to gender studies, including the Jessie Bernard Award and Victoria Schuck Award. She continues to perform research on global gender politics. Ideal for introductory classes

I used GENDER when teaching an introductory class on the sociology of gender to fresh and sophomore undergraduate university students. The book is written in an accessible fashion, which speaks to young adults. This, above all, is its strong suit. GENDER authors succeed in discussing complex ideas using simple, everyday language, without creating unnecessary separations between theoretical and empirical discussions, and without reverting to dichotomies. Each topic is discussed through intersectional lens. Examples are drawn from the world of reference of today’s youth—including sports, popular culture, and daily experiences.

An exemplary textbook!

I used this book for my class, "Gender and Society," and it turned out to be an excellent choice. I love the intersectionality approach the text takes, allowing for deeper understanding of the course material and stimulating class discussion. The chapters are eloquently written while being accessible and witty at the same time. The authors respectfully and effectively relate often controversial material to students/readers of different backgrounds. I teach at a predominately white, conservative campus known for its presence of conservative Christians. Even in this context, my students genuinely enjoyed the reading and found the material insightful. Several students commented that they saw things in their lives they never noticed before, which is usually my main objective when teaching a 100-200 level sociology course. Another student said the book was very enjoyable and pleasurable to read. And for the cherry on top, the book is published by an independent publisher, which not only supports the efforts of these publishers but also means the book is affordable for students. All in all, what more could an instructor want from a textbook!

Excellence is normal

An excellent overview of Swiss graphic creativity. For such a small country and I read in the text that because of the mountains only about three-quarters of the land is habitable, so even more remarkable that in the last few decades the country exported and became famous for the 'Swiss Style'.

What I liked about the book was the comprehensive coverage and I think it's worth listing the Contents: Poster; Typo-graphics; Photo-graphics; Swiss style; Signs & symbols; Corporate design; Adverting; Public affairs; Type; Editorial design. Within each of these chapters, with essays and illustrations, there are some surprises, for example 'Signs & symbols' has sections on map making, traffic signs and banknotes (though surprisingly nothing on the countries stamps). The longest chapter is Corporate design, forty-three pages, dealing with Swiss international companies like Swissair, Geigy, Bally and Swatch, they generate a lot of printed material and of course company style manuals. Pages are shown from the manuals of Swissair, Swatch and Federal Railways.

For designers Swiss type needs no introduction and chapters 'Typo-graphics', a section in 'Swiss style' (by Lars Muller this book's publisher) and 'Type' look in detail at the designs that went round the world with Helvetica was the obvious winner. The country was, though, split into two camps, Zurich designers favored Helvetica while those in Basel preferred Univers, designed by Adrian Frutiger.

As the book covers a visual subject it is, of course, a pleasure to read and look through, the upright shape helps, too. Oddly all the text is in Akzidenz Grotesk, a German face designed around 1880, rather than Helvetica (or even Univers). There are 784 illustrations throughout the pages using numbers to identify them for the captions so avoiding the ungainly word directions (left, above, center right, bottom etc). The back pages have work related interviews with five contemporary Swiss designers, followed by a bibliography and Index (Bill, Gerstner, Hofmann, Lhose, Muller-Brockmann and Neuburg predictably get the most entries...no surprises there after all)

There is a photo in this book, of a 1928 portable miniature photograph, the size of a CD. This was long before the Walkman, the portable transistor radio, the pocket calculator, and the mania for miniature appliances. It seems, according to this book, that the Swiss were more concerned with utility that with beauty when they designed and built their tools, houses, and furniture. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that they were isolated by mountains, or that they have a history of neutrality? They managed to stay out of the wars that plagued Europe, so they had plenty of opportunity to develop their industries.

A lot of the furniture items in this book have dual uses, like the chair that can be collapsed into a bed. There’s also the Aermo Furniture Kit, containing a mattress, bed, desk, chair, and wardrobe, all folded into a carrying case. It was advertised as a way of dealing with displacement in post-war Europe, though I don’t recall over seeing it used. The simplicity is startling; almost all of the furniture items have squared edges, while American ones prefer things round. I suspect that it might be cheaper to have squared, rather than rounded edges, and without all the credit that Americans use, the average Swiss probably had to shop on a lower budget.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The designs are all simple and useful, not full of pretty housewarming stuff that you’d see in a Sears-Roebuck catalogue of the era. Then again, the USA, with abundant forests and fuel, had no shortage of materials and energy to waste. The Swiss obviously had to conserve.

Beattie offers a penetrating critique of Thomas's Aristotelianism, but she also excavates the mystical treasures within his theology. This enables her to show how Thomas's God remains an unconscious but potent influence in the shaping of modern western thought, and to ask what transformations might be needed in order to bring about a Thomism for our times. Probing beneath the surface of Thomas's Summa Theologiae and other writings, she brings to light the Other of Thomas's One God - an incarnate, maternal Trinity who emerges when Thomas's Aristotelian ontotheology is suspended and the more neglected aspects of his doctrinal and theological insights are allowed to emerge.

Lacan makes possible a renewed Thomism which offers a rich theology of creation, incarnation, and redemption capable of responding to some of the most urgent and far-reaching challenges that questions of gender, nature, and God pose to Christian theological language in its classical and postmodern formations.

About the Author

Tina Beattie is Professor of Catholic Studies at the University of Roehampton in London. She is widely known for her academic publications and also for her more popular writings, lectures, and broadcasts. Her main areas of interest include Catholic theology, critical theory, and issues of gender; the Virgin Mary in theology and art; Christian mysticism, and theology and human rights. She began her academic studies as a mature student at the University of Bristol when the youngest of her four children started school, and she went on to do her PhD there on Marian theology and symbolism. In addition to her academic work, Tina is involved in a range of activities to do with theological education and awareness-raising in parishes, schools, and other communities.
