A well-written biography about Broadway actor Peg Entwistle, who was often mentioned by Bette Davis as one of the best actresses she ever saw. Amongst the e-readers, this book is available in Nook format as well as Kindle. Recommended.

Get to know Peg Entwhistle through this excellent book!

I'm about 75% of the way through (according to my Kindle), and I finally had to put it down because I know how the story ends, and I am reluctant to read about her death. I know that sounds silly, but thanks to the excellent writing, I felt that I got to know Peg, and I really don't want this book to end. I've collected many books about Hollywood, the movies in general, moviemaking, and various stars of the golden era, and I never dared to dream that anyone would tackle this story because in every book about Hollywood, when Peg Entwhistle is mentioned, there's very little else written besides her grand gesture of jumping from the Hollywood sign. I salute James Zeruk for his painstaking research, obvious care for this forgotten woman, and his ability to put together a wonderful story that made her come to life again. This book greatly appealed to me, and I'm enjoying it immensely, even though I dread reading about her death. For those who order the Kindle version, the formatting is very good, and the pictures are pretty good quality (some, due to their originals, aren't crystal clear, but overall, the photos are sharp). I recommend this book!

Peg Entwistle, finally understood

As a child I remember reading about the beautiful young actress who ended her life by jumping off of the Hollywood sign. I have always wondered what drove her to such a desperate act. James Zeruk Jr. has written a very sensitive and personal biography that is expertly researched. He pulls us into the heart and mind of a gifted actress, and provides a compelling look at Hollywood at that time. I highly recommend this book, it is one of the best biographies I have ever read. It is the only one that has ever brought me to tears.

About the Author
"Sandy Pfeiffer" has spent a career in technical and professional writing. With a Ph.D. in English, he is vice president for academic affairs and a professor of English at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Georgia. His home department offers both B.S. and M.S. degrees in Technical and Professional Communication, as well as a B. A. in International Technical Communications.

Besides the "Pocket Guide," Pfeiffer has written "Technical Writing: A Practical Approach," now in its 5th edition (Prentice Hall, 2003). The book is used in colleges and universities around the country. He also wrote "Proposal Writing: The Art of Friendly Persuasion" (Merrily 1989); coauthored, with Chuck Keller, "Proposal Writing: The Act of Friendly and Winning Persuasion" (Prentice Hall, 2000); and wrote "Pocket Guide to Public Speaking" (Prentice Hall, 2002).

Since 1979, Pfeiffer has taught communication seminars to business, industry, and government groups in the United States and overseas. Sample seminar topics include Report Writing, Proposals, Oral Presentations, Effective Meetings, and Technical Editing.

Superior Book! A must for novice as well as professionals!

Dr. Kline has done in 72 pages what most books cannot do in 300 pages. He has given all speakers from the novice level to the professionals some very valuable tools and techniques for public speaking. While the title of this book may lead you to think that it is only for "Air Force" speakers, I can assure you that any speaker can use it, and they indeed should. I have been a reader of this book for five years and I have read it several times. I even use it to teach my 450 Air Force students per year. This book is simply the most concise, informational and easy to apply tool that any person can have. Thank you Dr. Kline for your wisdom.

Thanks to the previous reviewer for the kind words. I wrote this short book on speaking in the late 80's. I have never made a penny from its use or sale. I have written a longer book on speaking; I made money on it. I am now in my early 70's and teaching leadership courses at Troy University. This short book is the one we use in our Tools of Leadership Course. Why? It tells what leaders need to know in order to speak effectively; and it does it simply. There is little I would change about the book. Hundreds of thousands of copies have been printed. It is still being used extensively AND it isn't just for Air Force speakers. I am pleased the book has made a small contribution to helping people speak effectively.

Speaking Effectively

This is an excellent guide for inexperienced, and perhaps shy and unwilling, speakers. I used an earlier version of this manual starting in 1968 and it benefited me for decades thereafter.
