A thoughtful narrative of modern development

I was unfamiliar with the trends in African and Southeast Asian development before reading this book ... the title and subject seemed interesting. However, during the course of my reading it, I have grown significantly more knowledgable about how "3rd world" nations are on their own tracts to develop and enter the ranks of "modern societies".

He begins with a short history of both African and Asain developments, the key players, and background that sets each region up before they take charge of their own destinies. From there, he investigates the cultural, economic, environmental, and international pressures that disseminate one economy from another, as well as invesitgating the ultimate consequences of this growth.

This book is well-written, interesting evenfor a non political science or economics major, and thought-provoking to the core. I highly recommend this book to any who would be interested in learning more about modern development in differing regions of the world.

Oversimplification that ignores so many factors

If you like the simplistic ivory-tower American view of the world then this is the book for you. If you want the far more complex truth then don't waste your time with this book. I received this book from a college student and was shocked that this passed as scholarly writing. I understood the dumbed-down level of the book once I saw the author writes articles for WIRED magazine and also cashed in by writing a biography about a distant relative. There are many great books available about the developing world, but this is not one of them.

About the Author
Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag burst onto the art scene in 2013 when his first series of paintings were shared on the Internet, and has since become something of a phenomena in the art and sci-fi communities. His original blend of naturalistic landscape paintings with science-fiction elements and a very low-key recollection of growing up in the ’80s struck a chord, not just in Sweden, but all over the world. The Verge, Wired, IO9, Scientific American, and The Guardian have all praised his work. But until late 2014, the only place you could watch his art was in digital form on the Internet. Stålenhag splits his time between a small cabin at Mälaröarna (the setting that inspires his work) and an apartment in Stockholm.

An immersively illustrated sci-fi world that will suck you in.

Initially conceived as a 2 volume kickstarter art book project, Simon Stålenhag’s Tales from the Loop is a mesmerizing sci-fi journey that takes the viewer through various desolate country and city landscapes inhabited by abandoned robots, machinery and giant mecha.

Stålenhag combines his stunning eye for pleasing aesthetics and apt application of visual tricks like atmospherics, perspective, depth of field and subtle rim lighting to create highly cinematic images that really draw viewer in. And I love his taste for mecha and machinery.

The 2 volume kickstarter set was a little out of my price range, so I’m really glad this general release is now available and I wasted little time picking it up, lest it goes out of print again. Highly recommended.

Amazing book, everything I expected and more

An incredible view into an alternate Sweden in the 80s and 90s where a massive project called "The Loop" forever changed the world and the technology of the times. Robots , androids, wormholes, and dinosaurs create an entirely unique atmosphere. Every few pictures have a short introduction that explain a story of a young boy growing up in the midst of these changes. I was really not expecting there to be a coherent story with this book as I thought it would just be a series of pictures with some information on each one but I was very happy to find otherwise. The pieces are amazing and the detail is stunning overall. This would be a great gift for a sci-fi lover of any age.

This is a table art book, telling a visual story of a world that never was. Sure, there are some actual written passages but the art pieces speak for themselves.I was a backer on Kickstarter for the project that brought this book to life. There will also be a second book next year. The Verge did a nice writeup on the author, the backstory for the pieces, and provided a small sample of about 5 images. Check it out!

About the Author
THE EDITORS Both editors graduated from the School of Dentistry, University of Athens (Greece) and the Orthodontic postgraduate program of the Ohio State University, earning a Master's degree.

Theodore Eliades additionally holds a doctorate in biomedical materials from the University of Athens, and a PhD in biomaterials from the University of Manchester. He is an Associate Professor of Orthodontics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), and affiliated with institutes in the USA and EU (Texas, Marquette, Manchester, and Bonn). His research on biomaterials has generated 85 articles, 15 chapters and 4 books, the diffusion of which into fields associated with natural and engineering sciences led to a fellowship at the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, and a membership in both the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institute of Physics. Dr Eliades is Editor-in-Chief of the forthcoming Journal of Dental Biomechanics (Sage), Associate Editor of the European Journal of Orthodontics, and the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Editorial Board member in 5, and reviewer in 20 journals.

Nikolaos Pandis completed a fellowship in Craniofacial Orthodontics at the University of Texas, Southwester Medical Center. He is currently a doctoral Fellow at the University of Bonn and enrolled in the Master of Clinical Trials program at the College of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London. He has published over 20 articles in the areas of self-ligating appliances and bonding, and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. Dr Pandis maintains an orthodontic practice in Corfu, Greece.

Not What I've Come to Expect from Krugman

First off, even if you totally discount the rest of my review, buy the low price international version of this book. On the March 10, 2005 episode of the daily show Krugman elucidated his feelings quite clearly. "The real money is in textbooks. With other books, people need to decide whether to buy them or not. Students have to buy textbooks." Thanks Paul. I think I'm being charitable when I say that at $125 this book is a ripoff. It isn't even full color.

Anyway, on to the actual content of the book. I have to say that I was excited when I found out that my International economics course at Stanford was going to be using Paul Krugman's book. I've enjoyed his articles for the New York Times because they manage to cut right to the core of issues with an unusual amount of punch. Yet, time and time again I was disappointed with the frequently inpenatrable language and obtuse, unrealistic examples in this book. Unfortunately, the only part of Krugman's characteristic writing style that came through was a feeling of overwrought vitriol, which makes sense in an op-ed but has little place in a textbook. Furthermore, this book occupies a strange niche in the world of econ texts, it is not mathematically rigorous, nor is it well written. Usually we see one or the other but rarely both. Initially, I thought these observations were mine alone, but other students began openly voicing pointed criticisms of the book during class (and I am perhaps being too kind here in not repeating them). I've been in school nearly as long as I can remember and I have never seen such discontent with a text.

During the second half of the course even my econ prof became fed up and abandoned the book altogether. Given that, I find all of the positive reviews for this book rather astounding. My suspicion is that there might have been open rebellion amongst my classmates had not the professor decided to leave this text by the wayside. I also found that it is brimming with misplaced, one-sided arguments that come across as Krugman blatantly strawmanning arguments opposed to his own. One of many examples of this comes out of nowhere near the end of chapter 2. Krugman implies that anyone who doesn't believe in unmitigated free trade is intellectually irresponsible!?! This book pushes for unrestrained market fundamentalism throughout, primarily by misrepresenting any arguments that would effectively challenge it's simplistic and seemingly outdated dogma. This book, in particular, feeds into the same system of self serving scientism so prevalent in economics for the last 60 years.

Please don't mistake this review as the bile of a jilted student, I did quite well in the course. However, this is almost certainly the result of looking for alternative explanations of virtually every topic covered. The reason this book gets one star instead of two is because it lacks a lot of the modern learning tools prevalent in almost every other textbook. Things like quality questions, keywords, vocabulary and historical context all get short shrift in this this volume. If you're into learning about incomplete models that only represent a theoretical version of the world, this book is for you. Unfortunately, just like Krugman said on The Daily Show, if you are a student there is probably little chance that you have a choice on the matter. Buy the cheap international edition for 20 bucks. I would recommend that you use to the difference to buy William Easterly's Elusive Quest for Growth...and a beer.

A not-so-bad survey of international economics

Regarding Gerald Senarclens de Grancy's comments: The idea of Krugman as a Bush administration cheerleader is pretty funny. At first I thought this was a joke but then I realised it wasn't. Granted, the book doesn't mention the Tobin Tax, but there's only so much you can pack into a superficial survey text like this. Overall, I think the authors are pretty unbiased and mainstream. (Haven't used the web supplements, so can't comment on that).

Having seen this book evolve over several editions, I can honestly say that the current one represents a distinct improvement, with the new introductory chapter on the gravity model providing some much needed perspective at the start. However, it's not an ideal book to learn trade theory and open econonmy macro from. My favorite (although slightly more rigorous) is "The International Economy" by Kenen. And if you are only interested in trade theory, "International Trade, Theory and Evidence" by Markusen et. al. is superior.

A very good guide for an undergraduate course

I used several times the fifth edition of Krugman and Obstfeld's book to teach International Finance to undergraduates in economics, and I found it comprehensive, understandable and very didactic. True, the book does not follow a rigorous mathematical approach, even less a dynamic one, but I think that is not the authors' intention. On the contrary, they use simple equations, basic graphical analysis, empirical data illustrations and some economic history to show the main issues they want to. And I must say that they clearly succeed in explaining virtually every topic an undergraduate student should know about international economics.

There are several essential topics that should be part of the backbone of a course in international finance, and they are included in this book:

- the asset approach to exchange rates;
- the crucial role of expectations;
- the relationship between money, interest rates and the exchange rates in the short run;
- the long run relationship between prices and exchange rates;
- the internal and external equilibrium for small open economies;
- the interaction of fiscal and monetary policies in an international context;
- inflation bias and other policy formulation problems;
- fixed exchange rates and foreign intervention;
- A description of the evolution of the international monetary system;
- floating exchange rates; macroeconomic policy and international coordination;
- optimum currency areas;
- recent topics on the global capital markets; and
- growth, crisis and reform in developing countries.

In sum, the book by Krugman and Obstfeld is a pretty good undergrad textbook to learn for the first time the core of monetary issues in international economics.

Disrespectful to the Gibson bass

I wrote a email to Bacon and Moorhouse detailing my reasons for the above title. I own alot of Gibsons and Epiphones been playing out and in for over 30 years. They talk very little on the great Gibsons and the large list of known players of Gibsons, they pretty much state that the Tbird was all Gibson could do right. If i could have looked at it before buying I wouldnt have bought it. Should have been called "The Fender Bass Book", uninformed or definitely biased big time.

Not Just for Bassists - It's Great for Any Rock Fan!

This book follows the format of Mr. Bacon's other books (including The Fender Book and The Gibson Les Paul Book), and like his other books, it is a treat for the eyes. The photography is absolutely fantastic, with amazing detail. What is especially impressive is his inclusion of instruments owned by the stars who made them famous. It's not just a picture of a Hofner "Beatle Bass", it's one of Paul McCartney's Beatle Basses; it's not just a picture of an Alembic bass, it's John Entwistle's famous Alembic "Spider" bass from his days with The Who (and the list goes on and on...). Like Mr. Bacon's other guitar books, there's a pretty good identification guide in the back. Is this book REALLY a complete story of the electric bass with minute detail about every instrument of note (how's THAT for a pun)? Nah. If that's what you want, then consider this a "3 star" book at best (although you WILL learn something if you read it). On the other hand, is it a nice addition to one's own music library or a great gift book? Absolutely! (By the way - the ONLY reason I didn't rate it five stars is that the author tries, in my opinion, to cover too broad a subject matter in too short a space.) This is one of those books that's a lot of fun, even if it's just to "look at the pictures".

Its a great book, the content is of greater importance to the mature and maturing Christians alike. People need to know how to pray and to know that its ONLY BY THE WORD (double adged sword of the holyspirit) that we as Christians can effectively fight and also win the battle agaist satan and his agents. This book was wonderful it was very well written. The subjects dealt with situations that people encounter, and how to pray to remove those walls, and break free from those issues. The prayer points weren't too long, and i like that!! It's a thick book, and i would definately recommend this book. The price doesn't compare to the benefit you get from this book. I was disappointed that the author did not go into more detail in the writing of this book.
I had planned to use it in a Sunday School class setting, but the format would not work.
If more information had been available on the web page about the book then I would not have purchased it.
Charles Swindoll is one of my favorite authors but this time he didn't include much material.

So Good....

This short story was excellent. I want more Dmitry and I can't wait for V6! This story picks up with Dmitry brokering a deal with Elsa's father to supply guns and ammunitions. However, Elsa's old lover is there and is unhappy to see her with Dmitry. But, as we all know Dmitry doesn't take any BS from anyone. I love how he handles his business!

It was little sad to see Davyd because you know how it ends for him in Saving Anya. But, it was nice to get a glimpse into Dmitry and Davyd's relationship. You will see how their bond is much stronger compared to Dmitry and Ivan. Also, you will see how Ivan, Arie, and Vladimir start on the road to their respective endings.

I will say that this story was so good that it left me a little disturbed at the end. If you have read all the books you understand how much Royal means to Dmitry. So, I got a little upset that Dmitry was willing to forgo protection while sme*xing Elsa. They even talk about pregnancy. Ugh, I was so upset! I thought this was something special he had with Royal. I can overlook Anatoly because Dmitry was 18 at the time he got his girlfriend pregnant. But, if he routinely goes around not using protection then I think that's nasty and I'm disappointed.

I am just afraid Ms. Nelson is going to have a surprise kid pop up in a future book. Please Mrs. Nelson, if you read this don't do it.

Overall, I loved this book and it was a great addition to the series.

Mrs. Nelson has done it again! V5 was all that I expected it to be..I liked how it started off with the present. Anya has grown up and she is every bit of a spitfire as I knew she'd be. Then it went to the past. I knew when I started reading that Arie and Ivan along with Vladimir was going to make this book very interesting...I would give you guys more details but I can't so that means that you have to read it yourself!!!

Thanks again Mrs. Nelson for such a interesting story...I could barely work for trying to read!!!!!lol

Overall a Good Read

A few minor editing issues here and there still don't detract enough from the story's enjoyment. This was a good read and a good show into the mind of Dmitry Medlov but I just have to say it was so anti-climatic. Everything that happens in this short edition was summed up in the description above. There weren't any surprises and nothing really new nor were there any major changes. There was a meeting in Angola, a wedding, a double cross, some killing in London then everyone was back home resting in their beds. Still... looking forward to number 6 - not sure why, but I am.
