Fantastic characters but the writing didn't deliver

I had, if not high expectations, then at least decent expectations for this book, given previous ratings and reviews. However, I was sadly disappointed. I have to start by saying that I absolutely loved the characters. They were quirky, fun, and wonderfully flawed. Even the plot was interesting - two families with significant supernatural powers have each apparently lost someone in a mysterious helicopter crash. Computer geek Conan (yes, that is apparently his name) and feng shui expert extraordinaire what's-her-name (that's bad...I just finished the book last night and can't remember her name already?!) come together to solve the mystery. The book is billed as a romance but while the characters do get together I really just didn't feel the romance vibe throughout the story. There was so much reliance on the first book in this series that I was constantly distracted trying to fill in the blanks that the story felt extremely choppy to me. There was so much subtle, ironic humor smattered throughout that I was also very distracted by having to reread sentences and paragraphs trying to catch what I missed. A decent plot with great characters, but the writing just didn't deliver for me.

Well written and intriguing

I love Patricia Rice Malcolm books, so when she offered the opportunity for reviewers to request ARCs, I requested it on the spot. And overall, I am glad I did.

At first, I had a bit problem with the fact that it was set in California, since I associate it with Georgian England. But once that passed, I enjoyed exploring California with Dorrie and Conan. The settings felt believable. From Conan's beach house to their trip to the Mojave desert. One thing I appreciated was that Ms Rice clearly showed that California is a geologically active state, and let that affect both Dorrie's and Conan's lives.

I enjoyed following Dorrie's and Conan's search for their brothers. At first glance, they look like they have nothing in common. Dorrie is Irish-Chinese, and believes in the paranormal. Conan is a bit more sceptical about the paranormal, and wants solid facts. But as the story developed, they gradually realised that they complemented each other. I loved watching Dorrie reclaiming her life with Conan at her side.

The search for their brothers were fast paced, and I loved how both Dorrie and Conan were a part of it ( Nothing frustrates me more than when the heroine is just waiting on the sidelines).

The biggest problem I had with this story was connecting with the characters, but that might be because I read it in December, but forgot to review it. So I had to re-read it a month later or so, and I still remembered what happened.

Magical romance

In Rice's contemporary romance novel, Dorothea Franklin's life is a little off center at the moment. Her father is an invalid and she is drawn to doing anything to prevent her brother from dying in a helicopter crash.

In search of the truth, she turns to computer expert Conan Oswin because his brother died under similar circumstances. Dorothea didn't feel the vibrations of her brother's death and when she reveals that fact to Conan, he wants to dismiss the notion but his instincts are strong and his senses are already on full alert looking for trouble that might be coming their way.

A well written story that is very detail oriented with a dynamite plot, plenty of magic and likeable characters.

Nonstop Fun!

The second novel in Maberry's Joe Ledger series starts very soon after Patient Zero left off, with Joe visiting the gravesite of one of his oldest and dearest friends. The problem is, he's a wanted man, and the man that wants him is none other than the Vice President of the United States. He's sent his goon squad to pick up Joe, but Joe has other plans...

Taking off like lightning and never letting up, The Dragon Factory is a cross-genre, gritty, fun, roller coaster of a ride! I loved Patient Zero, and The Dragon Factory doesn't disappoint, in fact, I think I loved it more! Told in first person POV of Joe Ledger, my favorite tough, snarky ex-cop, (with frequent forays into third person with one of the book's star psychos, Cyrus Jacoby) it grabs you by the throat, and doesn't let you go until the last page! What's not to love? Joe and Echo Team have to deal with everything from psychotic Nazi clones, to an organization called the Cabal, which is out to achieve ethnic cleansing on a worldwide scale. Add to that DNA manipulated beasts, a race of slaves called the New Men, bio-terror on an epic scale, a pair of the creepiest, ickiest (yes, icky), twisted (had to throw that in there), albino (yes, albino) twins, and a boy hero that will break your heart and reaffirm your belief in the power of the human spirit.

Maberry throws all of this at you with his usual perfect pacing and style, and the depth of detail and research put into this book is, as always, impeccable. One thing that Maberry does in his novels is something that you don't see a lot of in books that are this action oriented. In the midst of all this chaos and adrenaline, in Joe Ledger he's created a character that not only kicks ass, but he has a heart and soul, and it comes across in nearly every scene that he's in. In Joe, he gives us a hero to root for, if for no other reason than he is intrinsically good. Joe is not superhuman, and he doesn't have supernatural abilities. He's an everyman with, admittedly, rather unique talents that we can all identify with in some way. In The Dragon Factory, Maberry takes topics that are complex and sometimes terrifying, and delivers them with humanity and sometimes humor. There were moments during this book (in particular one) that brought me to tears, as with Patient Zero, and Maberry shows us that humanity does not have to be sacrificed for the sake of an exciting read!

This series is absolutely not to be missed, and I recommend it to anyone that loves thrillers, horror, suspense, espionage, fantasy, and all of the above! I am breathlessly anticipating the third book in the Joe Ledger Series, The King of Plagues, due out March 29th!

I first discovered Jonathan Maberry in Patient Zero, the first in the Joe Ledger series. I grabbed that book because I love the zombie genre. I soon discovered this series would go far far beyond just zombies. I was hooked, if you want an unbiased review, stop reading now... In my opinion Dragon Factory is the best of the series. Madmen, genetics, nazis, monsters, mutants everything bad rolled up into one book! I hate to say it because book to movies are always terrible, but all I kept thinking while reading Dragon Factory was, why is this not a movie or HBO series? Take 24 and mix in X-Files.

A great continuation of the series!!!

I really enjoy living vicariously through Joe Ledger. Mayberry creates characters that are not only flawed, but somehow accessible.

The intensity was high and had me completely on the edge of my seat throughout. I kind of felt what was coming towards the end of the book and when it happened it was a soul crusher. I'm sure it was a way for the author to endear Ledger to the reader even more - I was thinking this the whole time until it happened. Well, it worked.

Couldn't put this one down and I really loved this story, even though I have an emotional hangover. Well done Mr. Mayberry!!! Thank you for Joe Ledger. I need a nap.

Hmm...Are two stars low enough?

For those of you who don't know, Vital Signs is the continuation of Cook's character Marissa Blumenthal from Outbreak.
In this novel, we find Marissa married and wanting a child. However, Marissa is barren, and it is the conspiracy behind her (and many other women's) infertility that is the basis for the rest of the novel.
First of all, Marissa's new husband received no introduction whatsoever. Not being mentioned in Outbreak, he seems like a character thrown in there to make the plot work. I hate characters like that...no soul, just a name on a piece of paper.
Second, what little personality of the characters that existed was so inconsistant from one scene to the next that it was annoying.
The plot was thrown together quite carelessly. Except for the medical knowledge present in the novel, I got the feeling that Cook didn't spend too much time worrying about trivial things as advancing a plausable plot. His characters are unbelievable...
good guys or bad.
As always, Cook's prose is awkward. Anyone should be able to tell he wasn't an English major. However, his style is easy to read, which is probably where much of his sucess stems from.
Anyway, if you want an intense read, read somethign else. If you want something to fill the time, this will do just fine.
Vital Signs is nothing spectacular (or even mediocre), but if you are bored this should cure it.

He was so determined that he would never leave his boat  until he was satified with his catch.   A young man with many jobs starting out as a newspaper boy and moving onto a position as a welder never dreamed that one day he would be hired as the man to erect an outside 400-foot elevator that  would ascend up the side of Stone Mountain. This man who fell in love with the mountain and became the Chief Carver of the Confederate Memorial is the same simple man that never took an art lesson in his life and believed that he had a purpose which soon became a historical monument that we all have come to love and enjoy.

The author begins with a general discussion of the linear equation and develops the notions of a fundamental system of solutions, the Wronskian, and the corresponding fundamental matrix. He then introduces the nonhomogeneous linear equation and the important variation of parameters formula, by which, following a consideration of the nth-order linear equation, the solution of the nonhomogeneous nth-order linear equation is obtained. A chapter is then devoted to the linear equation with constant coefficients.
The two following chapters are introductory discussions of stability theory for autonomous and nonautonomous systems. Included here are two results for nonlinear systems, Liapunov’s direct method, and some results for the second-order linear equation. The final chapter takes up the problems of the existence and uniqueness of solutions and related topics. Two appendixes — “Series Solutions of Second-Order Linear Equations” and “Linear Systems with Periodic Coefficients” — are also provided, and there are problems at the end of each chapter.

Nice ODE Book

This book is short and concise. Has the fundamental theory
that I needed to teach an introductory course in ODE.
However, I needed to supplement parts of the book. Specifically
Chapter 4 only concentrates in the 2D problems.

Clearly it is not an introduction to ODE. Very dense material, however, it is great for introducing topics like stability and acts as a wonderful reference.
