David Sauter is currently an instructor at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, California and is a registered Landscape Architect in the State of California. Prior to his teaching career, Mr. Sauter practiced as a consulting landscape architect in the Midwest. He has additional experience in plant maintenance, plant installation, landscape construction, masonry, carpentry, paving, and landscape management and has presented seminars for the nursery industry, master gardeners, extension services and public service organizations. David Sauter earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Landscape Architecture at Iowa State University and his Master of Arts Degree in Higher Education from The University of Iowa.

Great Professional Book

This book is full of incredible and professional information related to Landscape Construction. It's not meant to be a DIY book you'd get from Home Depot or Lowes. This book is meant for students and professionals wanting to learn best practices regarding Landscape Construction. Amateurs, landscape designers and architects can gain some valuable insights, too. We used this book as our textbook in the various landscape construction classes I took, studying to be a landscape designer.

An Essential Resource For Landscape Contractors

I'm glad I decided to buy this book, despite its high price. Having just recently become a landscape designer/contractor, it proved invaluable many times in the course of our company's first big job. For example, the sections on stone paving were very helpful when we were building a flagstone patio, as they helped us select the best foundation and edging materials.

I like the way the book is arranged, i.e. having a large section on paving, beginning with materials and site preparation for paving in general. This is followed by a chapter on each of the specific paving materials, such as concrete, unit pavers, dry laid stones, mortared paving, and granular paving.

The extensive section on retaining walls, which I am about to take advantage of in our next job, is arranged similarly.

This book is the industry standard. It is used as a text in City College of San Francisco, and it is also listed as a resource in the California Contractor's State License Board's Study Guide for the Landscaping (C-27) License Examination.

So if you want to do landscape construction, I highly recommend this one.

I found this book to be very thorough and detailed in its approach to a variety of landscape construction issues. It has detailed pictures and diagrams that illustrate the processes and make it easier to understand. The information is up to date, easy to read and a great learning tool for the student, professional or hobby person. As a landscape student, I find it a great resource book.

A tale of humiliation...and hilarity

I read this on the train to New Jersey and back in January, and I'm sure my fellow passengers were looking at me strangely, because I was snorting and saying, "ha!" Maybe it's just being around academics again, but I found this novel extremely funny, and I probably will search out more Lodge based on it.
The idea is simple: two professors, one at a small college in England, the other at a huge conglomerate in California, switch places for an academic year. The English professor, who is barely scraping by, longs for the materialism of American society; the American professor, on the verge of divorce, is trying to get his wife to see past his infidelities and acknowledge his worth as a husband. But people are people all over, and while both professors undergo quite a bit of culture shock, and cause some culture shock in the academic societies that they become a part of, the real story here is that it is a small world after all (hmm, funny that, but Small World is the name of the sequel to this novel.
One of the best sections of this novel is the depiction of a game called Humiliation, wherein you must name a novel that you have not read, but that you expect everyone else at the table/party to have read. The idea is that by admitting not having read a canonical text (especially among Literature scholars) you will be humiliated. It's the kind of intellectual party game that Seinfeld watchers just can't join in on, because it assumes a sophistication. Either that, or it's just snobbery.
The other thing that raises this story about similar counterparts (including Kingsley Amis' Lucky Jim, which I liked, but not as much as this novel) is the clever way in which it shifts form within the story. For example, section three is done entirely epistolary, while the ending is written in screenplay format. The novel is also self-reflecting, in a wry sort of metafictional way. You know that you're reading a story, and the story knows that you are reading it, but instead of pressing the point as in some of the more aggressive post-modern works, it does some sly winks and nods in the general direction of the reader.

Witty, accurate, compelling ("dated" misses the point)

As a British graduate student at UC Berkeley, the campus upon which "Euphoric State" is closely modelled, and as a graduate of an English university similar to "Rummidge," which doubles for Birmingham, I can vouch for the accuracy of Lodge's beautifully-wrought satire. I zipped through "Changing Places" in less than a day and can't remember the last time I enjoyed a novel so much. Lodge was a visiting professor from Birmingham who taught at Berkeley in the late 60s (Philip Swallow is thus a kind of alter ego), and thirty-two years after the action takes place, there's much that's still recognizable here. The satire of academic life in England and America hits the bullseye, the characterizations are broad but retain a sympathetic humanity, the drama is compelling and amusingly risqué. There's also a nicely constructed vein of self-referential literariness that emerges on occasion, without being obtrusive. Accusations by some readers that the novel is "dated" miss the point - one might as well say Jane Austen is dated. Yes, the era of campus radicalism and sit-ins has receded into history, but the comparisons Lodge draws between English and U.S. campus life, academic politics and professors are still mostly valid. (Perhaps the biggest difference is that British academics have since come closer to their U.S. counterparts in having to worry about "publish or perish.") It's fascinating to note that many of the minutiae have not changed: British lecturers still give grades like Swallow's ultra-precise B+/B+?+; Berkeley's Telegraph Avenue ("Cable Avenue" in the book) is still a living monument to hippiedom (albeit somewhat commercialized now) and its People's Park ("People's Garden") survives unfenced and enjoyed by the community. Two caveats: readers addicted to neat-and-tidy Hollywood endings may be disappointed; everyone else should take care to read "Changing Places" first, proceed to "Small World," and then go on to "Nice Work."

A very funny novel and a wonderful read

David Lodge's "Changing Places" had me in stitches. It's such a funny book. The prose is highly readable, crisply written and races along so charmingly that it's hard to put it down once you've started. Although Philip Swallow and Morris Zapp are drawn from the two contrasting cultures they symbolise, they are never allowed to degenerate into caricatures. Both are highly real and believable characters, sharing much the same human frailties. While Zapp is unashamedly direct, hollow and crass, Swallow is rather more reserved, diffident, but with the same potential though not the guts for dishonesty. It is only by "changing places" that they become themselves, albeit in a different environment. Even the behaviour of their wives change when subjected to the opposite cultural influences. Admittedly, the setting of the "exchange" in the late 60s (with all the references to student protests and pot smoking in university campuses) has tended to date the book a bit. But who cares, when you derive such enormous pleasure, laughter and fun from reading what must seem like a novel for the ages. I can see thousands reading it 50 years into the new millenium.

Great book...one minor problem

This book is for those interested in a comprehensive, up to date volume on lipids, the metabolic syndrome, and the development of atherosclerosis. It is an excellent book, and I love having a Kindle version, it's so easy to wiki any unfamiliar terms.

I have one quibble...many of the figures have captions that are truncated. It seems that there is a maximum of one screenload of caption per figure, and some of the captions are much longer.

Good Tutorial--Pretty Complete

I'm not finished with this book, but am very pleased so far. Stevens' organization and completeness are excellent. He tries to go from simpler concepts to more complex ones, and not get ahead of himself. It's difficult to do this with a topic like programming, where everything is interrelated!
The instruction is pretty easy to follow, and the examples are very apt and easy to understand, with good variable names. Unlike most C++ books, Stevens' does not assume you know C. I did notice a couple of places in the book where it might be hard to get the concept if you had never used C at all, but I think if you kept reading and tried the examples, you could figure it out. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to learn C on their own. The only criticism I have is about the editing and proofing quality (typos in code, scratches on printing plates) but only editorial types like me would notice such details. Well worth the money if you don't have time to take a C++ class.

Too many errors -- ruins an otherwise good book

This is the first time that I have written a review of a book I haven't finished reading -- and probably won't. I bought this book for the advertised purposed -- to teach myself C++, and as someone who started programming in 1965 (that's nineteen SIXTY-five) in assembly language, and has learned a number of languages since then, I didn't anticipate much difficulty here.
On the plus side, the layout is nice, the book is clear and pretty well written, it seems to be complete, and the CD-ROM does provide a good learning tool.
On the minus side, there are major errors that seem to have crept in between the fifth and sixth editions of the book (I compared my copy with a fifth edition owned by a friend). The first ones were pretty obvious and easy to figure out if you were paying attention to what you were reading. But when I discovered that the code example that should have been #5-12 was actually a reprint of #5-2 with the notes from what should have been #5-12 I began to wonder how much care had been applied to checking this book.
Then I did the personal workbook questions at the end of chapter five and discovered that the answer key simply omitted the answers to questions 7 & 8 -- both of which I happened to want to check myself on.
At that point I decided that I couldn't trust this source any more, sent an e-mail to the publisher pointing out the errors I had spotted to date, and put the book away.
In a classroom situation where a teacher could point out the errors and work around them, this wouldn't be a big problem. However, when the book is designed so people can teach themselves, there's no human intervention to cover for the errors -- so they simply shouldn't be there.

A worthy goal, but...

I really tried to like this one. When I bought it, I liked the intro where Mr. Stevens said he wouldn't throw technical jargon at the reader, but then he does precisely that. Of course, C++ is full of jargon. The problem is that he frequently uses terms he doesn't define, combining such jargon into indecipherable explanations only an engineer could understand. Once I got past the stuff in the first few chapters which I already knew, I was lost.
Take pointers (please). Unlike Bruce Eckel's book (Thinking in C++, Vol 1), Mr. Stevens never explains WHY they are useful, or what practical benefit they provide. You are lead through rote steps and left with no understanding. The material is too terse. Learning such a complex topic as C++ is more than learning syntax. Yes, he tells you the mechanical things you can do with pointers, but never says why you would want to do them in the first place. Same with unions; his very brief description left me completely in the dark. Once again, Bruce Eckel to the rescue.
The idea of a book like this is a good one, but if it claims it is for programming beginners, it must deliver. This one seems more geared toward impressing beginners with the author's knowledge. I don't think that was his intention, but that is the result.

This study book is a must have for anyone getting ready to take this TExES. Studying for the test is stressful enough, but this study guide gives you a great idea of what to expect. This guide provides lots of example questions as well as ideal answers to provide. Everything is written in a clear and concise way that is easy to understand for all readers. Everything is very well organized, so if there is a section that you want to focus on, you can go straight to that section instead of reading from cover to cover. I felt a lot better about my test after I used the study guide to prepare. The questions that I used to study really were similar to the ones on the actual test. I took both of the included practice tests, as well. These sample tests were very similar to the actual test, so I would absolutely recommend taking those as part of a study session, as well. Not only did a study guide help me go into the exam with less stress and more confidence, but it also helped me pass! I would recommend using a study guide like this one to anyone that is preparing for this TExES.

It has a nice and easy layout with eady to understand and retain explanations as well as multiple practice tests and an answer key.

This guide provides lots of example questions as well as ideal answers to provide. Everything is written in a clear and concise way that is easy to understand for all readers. Everything is very well organized, so if there is a section that you want to focus on, you can go straight to that section instead of reading from cover to cover. I felt a lot better about my test after I used the study guide to prepare. The questions that I used to study really were similar to the ones on the actual test. I took both of the included practice tests, as well. These sample tests were very similar to the actual test, so I would absolutely recommend taking those as part of a study session, as well. Not only did a study guide help me go into the exam with less stress and more confidence, but it also helped me pass! Cynicism began as a school of philosophy that was largely inspired by Socrates and often decried by popular commentators as a social pathology, a nihilistic rebellion against the foundations of civilization. Chapter One establishes the foundations of classical Greek cynicism, while later chapters illustrate the varied faces of the cynic phenomenon in the persons of such disparate characters as Machiavelli, Nietzsche, Diogenes, the Dadaists, George Bataille, Samuel Beckett, Auberon Waugh, the creators of South Park, and others. Nietzsche is portrayed as the most important representative of both classical and postmodern cynicism, as well as the pivotal link between the two. The book focuses on significant periods of historical change, such as the Renaissance, and the historical cynics responsible for several seminal social ideas, including cosmopolitanism (citizenship of the world), asceticism (personal growth through self-testing), and parrhesia (finding one’s voice in the presence of tyrannical forces). The! author claims that aspects of Greek cynicism are present in contemporary society, offering a positive strategy for living in a hostile world.

Cynicism resurrected

Ian Cutler has written an impressive and compelling book on the development of Cynicism from classical times to our own time. The book is simply extraordinary from the point of view of scholarship and because of its argument, namely, the Cynicism, the philosophical stance of Diogenes of Sinope, is the most relevant philosophy for the twenty-first century, a thesis with which I am in full agreement. I congratulate the author of his important philosophical and sociological contribution, and I urge prospective readers to plunge themselves into the pages of this book. They will surely learn a great deal and enjoy Cutler's persuasive prose.
