Composed between 2 and 8 A.D., Ovid's (43 B.C.-?A.D. 17) epic poem purports to tell the story of the universe. Competing over the centuries with such formidable adversaries as the Bible, the Upanishads , Darwin, and modern physics, The Metamorphoses remains one of the world's most engaging cosmologies. The primary strength of Slavitt's ( The Fables of Avianus ) translation is its conversational diction, which accurately conveys the style of storytelling pervading the original. His departs from most existing translations by resisting slavish preoccupation with detail, allowing him to anticipate and engage a restless and modern reader. For example, in Book Seven, Slavitt interrupts the narrative to comment on Ovid's often long-winded style, and replaces ``forty lines of travel'' (Medea's) with 40 verse lines of his own criticism of the text. Another characteristic touch is the presence of innumerable loan words, mostly from French. Unfortunately, Slavitt's poetic line has the mildly irritating tendency to throw the reader off the back of its lumbering cadence. As poetry, the translation neither invigorates nor inspires, and much of it seems to have been written with a shrug, as if to Slavitt verse held a secondary position to subject matter. Otherwise, his Ovid displays poise and a refreshingly varied texture. His translation is constructed like a Shakespearian play: it satisfies those who want only to enjoy the vaudevillian spectacle of Jupiter and Juno's marriage, and relive the adventures of the Argonauts or the Trojan War. Yet it will also charm those stimulated by subtle references to postmodern ideas, by a liberal, multilingual vocabulary, and by the occasional lame joke.

Slavitt's new translation of Ovid's masterpiece is a joy to read, taking a place beside the recent translation of Allen Mandelbaum (LJ 11/1/93) as well as those of May M. Innes (Penguin, 1955) and Rolfe Humphries (Indiana Univ. Pr., 1955). While Mandelbaum and Slavitt are good poets who work to preserve the poetry in their translations, the former is more accurate and the latter smoother and more fluent. Slavitt renders Ovid's witty verse narrative into modern idiomatic English, making it contemporary without relying on informality or losing the elegance of the original. If his diction and reworking of passages are not always faithful to the original, they are true to the original's tone and spirit. As such, while Mandelbaum is perhaps better for the serious student of classical literature (with or without Latin), Slavitt is a better introduction to the pleasures of Ovid for the general reader. For all libraries.

For the less scholarly among us

I can see why, if you are a Latin scholar, or very serious about Ovid, you might be put off by this free translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses. Slavitt writes, in the middle of Book Seven, that "any sensible poet would lay (the background story) out somehow", and that Ovid has written "footnotes without a text, a quiz, or a gazetteer of distractions, its only sense in what it refuses to say." Useful, interesting opinions, of the sort typically encountered while reading an author's note. But these comments (and others like them) are inserted directly into the text. So yes, I could see how purists would not like that. Although, I have to admit that I loved it. The tone was very conversational, making the translation easy to understand. And now I feel like I have a good grasp of many of the Greek/Roman myths. In my opinion, this is a very approachable translation of one of those books you've always meant to read.

an honest, earnest translation

Slavitt's free translation of Ovid is generally very true to the tone of the original, & only sometimes slightly awkward. Slavitt's understanding of Ovid & of translation is great. The Ovid he presents modern English-speaking readers with is much more human & easily flowing than the Ovid of many other translators. Ovid's Metamorphoses is one of the greatest classics of western literature, Ovid one of the most significant writers of our thousands of years of literature, & Slavitt does the man, the book, & readers a good service with this translation.

Ovid in the Hands of a Master Poet and Translator

So many translations suffer one of two fates: either the translator has a wonderful grasp of the foreign language in question but is not a very talented poet in his own, or he is a wonderful poet but a terrible linguist. David R. Slavitt is both an extremely prolific and talented poet, novelist, and essayist in his own native English, and an excellent linguist. This translation of a classic that is so often translated may seem unnecessary. Why have one more translation of Ovid's "Metmorphoses"? Read this version and you'll see why.

About the Author
educated at Harvard, AB (1945), MS (1948), PhD (1951). His doctorate was in nuclear physics for thesis work under Norman Ramsey. In 1945-46 he joined the wartime Operations Research Group of the Navy Department in Washington, D.C. In later years he was employed by Navy laboratories in research and administrative capacities. On retirement in 1980, he returned to physics and undertook both theoretical studies and various small-scale experiments described in his book Heretical Verities. He is a member of Sigma Xi and Phi Beta Kappa, and a past member of the Operations Research Society of America and the American Physical Society. He has about 40 publications in established (refereed) physics journals and more than twice that number in dissident physics journals.

Not just another relativity slam.

Phipps has the good fortune to actually have been a practicing Phd physicist. Having been forced into the mold of lock step physics, he has, upon retirement, let loose pent up frustrations that must have festered over time.

Fortunately for us, he is a master at the use of the language and this artifice allows a rather uncharacteristic eloquence to his verbage that would attract any reader in search of english written in a form that is all but dormant. The book would be a pleasurable read from this point alone were it not for the pressing need to have things put aright by the author in the areas of physics not so deeply trodden in our modern age.

Phipps doesn't attack relativity directly, as so many do in a rabid fashion of late, but does us the honor of showing how much of its "bed rock", Maxwellian electrodynamics, was allowed to lead physics off track. This bed rock did not get fully corrected by the time Einstein did his work. Phipps gives us a much needed history lesson which is so often overlooked in modern science. He shows errors in many works, and later attempted corrections that ultimately went begging or that complicated, needlessly, issues that might have been handled in a wiser, more direct fashion.

He does not let words alone speak for physics, but involves us in the mathematics to a level that only those deeply involved might follow to full advantge. Yet as an electrical engineer, I perservered and gained real insights to work that normally is left to higher level physicists.

Phipps takes a delightful relish in pointing out issues that are just not right on the path to modern accepted relativistic physics. The reader will love his powerful use of the language in finger pointing and following up on faux pas on the part of his fellow physicists.

The book is a must read for those willing to think a bit deeper and allow a physicist to reveal that the veil of physics is a bit tattered and shop worn and, to its detriment,loaded with all manner of operable but poorly conceived patchwork attempts.

A real eye opener, regardless of your thoughts on the matter in the end.

Intellectually stimulating, eloquent, humorous in places, and very thought provoking.

A Crisp, Intelligent Delight

Phipps has done great work here. Set aside, for a moment, what you may think of consensus science
versus 'fringe' work. Set aside, too, your beliefs about the verities of Relativity, Maxwell's
equations, and the like. This book is important because it's written as a conversation between the
reader and a very bright and passionate man, a man who knows physics well, mathematics well, and
history very well. I learned things here that were never even hinted at in 4 years of education in
physics. Even the revealed history here is worth the price of admission.

OK, pick up your beliefs about consensus science and relativity now. Worst case: you buy this
book, find fault with it, and use it in your classroom to exercise the students' minds. It will
certainly do that, regardless of the stance of the author!.

I recommend this book enthusiastically for teachers, science historians, science buffs, and very,
very especially, current physics students (sophomore level, who have taken at least a year of
statics/dynamics, a year of EM, a year of quantum, and a semester or two of relativity theory.)

Dissident Physics at its Best

For those who are interested in views contrary to Einstein's theories of relativity, this book is a "MUST-HAVE." Phipps is without a doubt the most entertaining writer who disagrees with Einstein and his followers. Phipps appears to be someone who really and truly understands what he is talking about.

If your special interest is the topic of "time," you simply must read this book.

Highly recommended.

About the Author

Davita Silfen Glasberg is a Professor and Chair of the Sociology Department at the University of Connecticut-Storrs. She has published extensively on issues of bank hegemony, the state in finance capitalism, and political economy, including The Power of Collective Purse Strings: The Effects of Bank Hegemony on Corporations and the State (University of California Press). She is also deeply involved in research regarding the social constructions of race, class, and gender. I am currently working on a book about power, oppression, and the state, which explores this question. She has co-authored the following college texts:

poor technical editing

Cute projects but a lot of the cutting instructions are incorrect. ie. pg 14 - the finished dimensions are 16 x 16 1/2 but cut 4 3/4 x 35 when the diagram shows a piece 12 x 35. I have made many bags and usually the diagrams and pictures are enough but not this book. It appears much of the info was lost in translation.

I am not talking about translation problems--the original was in French. The problems mainly occurred when converting centimeters to inches. I tried to make a couple of purses and the numbers simply did not add up. It seems to me that people who gave it 5 stars have not tried to make any of the purses.

For example, I decided to cut the fabric for the the Azuma-bukuro in page 14, and it did not work. I contacted Miss Kajiwara (the author) and she explained in an email that the measurements for both fabrics were 43" x 8" (instead what the book has one fabric 40" x 8" and the other 43" x 8"). I tried to make the purse and the result was that it did not add up. When I turned the piece to form the two interlocking triangles, the parts did not match. The reason is simple: the original measurements are actually 110 cm x 20 cm. That is hardly 43" x 8"! The correct measurements in inches would be something like 43.3" x 7.87”. I wish they had left the measurements in centimeters!

I contacted the current publisher, Stackpole Books, and Candi Derr (Associate Editor, Crafts) wrote that "the first edition had many errors" (the understatement of the year!) and that "they should all be corrected in the edition that you will receive." I just got the "new" edition after two weeks wait and... it has the EXACT same mistakes. In fact, it is a first edition, therefore, NOT a "new" and revised one.

So, unless you can get it in French, buy the English edition at your own peril.
